(TOMMY)>> HEY GUYS, WE'VE BEEN WORKING ON AN OLD FORD AND MOPAR FOR SEVERAL WEEKS BUT WE'RE GONNA SHIFT GEARS AND START TINKERING ON AN OLD CHEVY. AND WE'VE GOT A LOT OF SHEET METAL LAYING AROUND. SO THERE'S GONNA BE SOME FAB WORK TO DO. AND YOU MAY ALSO NOTICE THAT JOE'S NOT IN HERE. WELL THAT'S BECAUSE HE'S OUT ON AN ADVENTURE,
BUT WE'LL MEET UP WITH HIM A LITTLE LATER DOWN THE ROAD. THIS '68 CAMARO IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE TYPE OF FIRST GEN FBODY YOU CAN GET FOR LESS THAT $10,000. OF COURSE SINCE THESE CARS ARE SO POPULAR, AT THAT PRICE THEY WILL COME WITH SOME SHEET METAL ISSUES. THE FENDERS ON THIS CAR SEEM TO HAVE BEEN IN A WRECK, FOLLOWED UP BY A LESS THAN STELLAR REPAIR JOB. THE ROOF, WELL THIS WAS A VINYL TOP CAR, MEANING IT'S RUSTY ALL THE WAY AROUND THE PERIMETER, AS WELL AS HAVING A NICE AFTERMARKET SUN ROOF RIGHT HERE. WE'VE GOT SOME RUST HERE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE
QUARTERS, WHICH IS SUPER COMMON IN PRACTICALLY ANY CAR FROM THIS ERA.
DIRT AND WATER GET TRAPPED IN HERE, WHICH MANUFACTURES SOME HANDY DANDY RUST HOLES.
(MARC)>> THAT'S THE BAD NEWS, THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT THE FLOOR PANS AND THE TRUNK FLOOR ARE IN REALLY GOOD SHAPE. SO WE'RE NOT GONNA MESS WITH THOSE. AS FOR THE REST OF IT, WE'LL HAVE TO REPLACE IT. THE FIRST THING WE'RE GONNA ADDRESS IS THE QUARTERS.
NOW WE CHOSE THIS FULL QUARTER PANEL FROM AMD. THE REASON WHY WE'RE GOING WITH FULL QUARTERS RATHER THAN PATCHING IS BECAUSE WHEN YOU PATCH A QUARTER IT WON'T REMOVE THE RUST SPOTS THAT REMAIN HIDDEN.
(TOMMY)>> WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT IS RIGHT HERE. THERE'S RUST ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE QUARTER PANEL. ANOTHER COMMON SPOT IS HERE ON THE BOTTOM ON THE FRONT OF THE WHEEL. NOW YOU'LL SEE THESE THINGS GET PIN HOLES ALL
THROUGH THE LIPS, AND IF YOU JUST REPAIR WHAT'S WRONG. THE PROBLEM IS WITH THAT IS SINCE THIS STUFF RUSTS FROM THE INSIDE OUT, WELL A COUPLE YEARS DOWN THE ROAD AND FROM DRIVING IT AROUND AND GETTING ALL THE MOISTURE BACK IN IT, YOU'LL GET NEW ISSUES POPPING BACK THROUGH. THEN YOU'VE GOTTA CUT INTO THAT FRESH PAINT. SO PUTTING A FULL QUARTER ON THIS THING IS A PRETTY GOOD IDEA. ANOTHER REASON, OUR REAR WINDOW HAS A LOT OF RUST AROUND IT HERE AT THE QUARTER. SO THAT FULL QUARTER'S GONNA TAKE CARE OF THAT TOO. BEFORE YOU GET TOO SLAP HAPPY AND START SLICING AND DICING ON YOUR CAR YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE ADJACENT PANELS ARE ALIGNED PROPERLY BECAUSE THEY'RE GONNA HELP LOCATE YOUR NEW REPLACEMENT PANEL. OUR DOOR IS OUT JUST A TASTE HERE AT THE TOP. I'LL TAKE CARE OF THAT AND THEN WE CAN GET TO CUTTING.
(MARC)>> WHILE HE'S CRANKING ON THAT DOOR LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE OTHER PANELS WE'LL BE REPLACING. AMD OFFERS A HOST OF OTHER SHEET METAL FOR THESE FIRST GEN CAMAROS INCLUDING FENDERS, ROOF SKINS, AND A VARIETY OF HOODS.
IT'S NOT YOUR RUN OF THE MILL SHEET METAL EITHER, USING FACTORY GAUGE STEEL AND INCLUDING DETAILS LIKE CORRECT BENDS AND SEAMS. THEY GO THE EXTRA MILE TO MAKE SURE THIS STUFF HAS THE BEST FITMENT THAT YOU CAN GET YOUR HANDS ON. IN FACT THIS IS ALL LICENSED THROUGH THE GM RESTORATION PROGRAM. THE SAME GOES FOR THE MOPAR PIECES. NOW PIECES LIKE THIS ARE GONNA BE A LITTLE MORE
EXPENSIVE BUT IN THE MAN HOURS SAVED IN INSTALLATION AND THE QUALITY OF THE CAR ONCE IT'S COMPLETE.
SPEND A LITTLE MORE ON THE FRONT END TO SAVE YOU A LOT ON THE TAIL END.
(TOMMY)>> GOT IT? WE WENT AHEAD AND REMOVED THE DECK LID AND THE GLASS
TO GIVE US SOME ROOM TO WORK. AND THIS OLD CAR, WELL IT NEEDS BOTH QUARTERS, THE ROOF PANEL, AND EVEN THIS REAR FILLER PANEL. BUT WE'RE NOT GONNA CUT ALL THAT AWAY BECAUSE IT WOULD CUT THE STRUCTURE OUT OF THE CAR. SO WE'RE JUST GONNA REPLACE ONE PANEL AT A TIME. USING A SANDING DISCS OVER THE AREAS WHERE THE SPOT WELDS ARE GONNA BE, WE CAN DIG DOWN UNDER THE PAINT AND MAKE THEM EASIER TO FIND. [ grinder spinning ]
(MARC)>> THEN WE'LL GRAB AN EIGHTH INCH BIT TO MAKE THE PILOT HOLES FOR OUR SPOT WELD CUTTER. ON SOME OF THESE WELDS YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON'T GO THROUGH BOTH LAYERS BECAUSE YOU WANT TO AVOID PUNCHING THROUGH THE BOTTOM LAYER. THAT'S WHAT YOUR NEW PANEL WILL NEED TO BE WELDED TO. BUT YOU CAN DRILL ALL THE WAY THROUGH ON SOME OF THEM BECAUSE THERE'S NOT METAL UNDERNEATH THAT YOU'RE TRYING TO SAVE. FOR EXAMPLE, THIS DOOR JAMB SUPPORT.
(TOMMY)>> THERE ARE QUITE A FEW SPOT WELDS UNDER THE LIP OF THIS WHEEL WELL. SO YOU MAY HAVE TO MAKE A TRIP TO THE FLOOR TO BE ABLE TO GET THEM ALL.

(TOMMY)>> A GOOD REASON TO DO THIS IS TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON'T SLICE THROUGH ANY SUPPORT STRUCTURE ON THE CAR. TO FREE UP THIS PANEL WE'LL CUT AROUND THE CPILLAR, DOWN THE DOOR JAMB, AND THEN AROUND THE WHEEL WELL. [ grinder spinning ]
(MARC)>> THE REASON WE'RE DOING THIS THE WAY WE ARE IS BECAUSE IT'S EASIER TO CUT OFF THE LARGE PARTS OF THE PANEL. THEN ADDRESS THE LEFTOVER PIECES, WHICH ARE STILL
ATTACHED TO THE CAR, SEPARATELY. WE'LL USE A COUPLE DIFFERENT CUTTERS TO DO THE JOB, SWITCHING TO THIS ELECTRIC CUTTING WHEEL IN PLACES WHERE WE DON'T HAVE TO BE AS CAREFUL, BUT
USING THE PNEUMATIC ONE FOR MORE DELICATE CUTS.
ALRIGHT, SO OUR QUARTER PANEL IS FREE NOW, ALL BUT RIGHT HERE WHERE IT MEETS THE ROOF LINE.
WE COULD JUST CUT IT OFF WITH A CUTOFF WHEEL BECAUSE THIS CAR'S GONNA GET A ROOF ANYWAY. BUT IN CASE YOU'RE JUST REPLACING A QUARTER PANEL, WE WANT TO SHOW YOU HOW TO SPLIT THE SEAM HERE. YOU COULD USE AN AIR CHISEL, WHICH WORKS FINE BUT IT COULD GET AWAY FROM YOU PRETTY QUICKLY, OR YOU
COULD GO OLD SCHOOL AND USE A HAMMER AND A COLD CHISEL. WE HAVE DECIDED TO GO WITH THIS ULTRA THIN PANEL KNIFE. [ hammer tapping ]

ATTACHED AS WE START PLANTING THAT NEW SHEET METAL. AND LATER TREAT YOURSELF TO SOME SERIOUS EYE CANDY AT THE SHEET MACHINE NATIONALS.
(TOMMY)>> ALRIGHT GUYS, WE'VE GOT MOST OF THE TRIMMINGS REMOVED FOR INSTALLING OUR QUARTER PANEL. ALL WE LACK IS THIS PIECE RIGHT HERE IN THE DOOR JAMB AND A SPOT BY THE TAIL PANEL. EACH ONE OF THESE SPOT WELDS GOING AWAY GETS US ONE STEP CLOSER TO HAVING THAT NEW QUARTER ON. YOU REALLY NEED TO HAVE A GOOD FEEL FOR IT IF YOU WANT TO USE THE AIR HAMMER BECAUSE LIKE MARC SAID EARLIER, IT CAN GET AWAY FROM YOU PRETTY QUICKLY. [ air hammer vibrating ]
(MARC)>> SO WE JUST ABOUT GOT IT ALL READY TO INSTALL THE NEW QUARTER. THERE IS A LITTLE STRIP HERE AT THE BOTTOM WHERE WE REALIZED THAT THE QUARTER PANEL ACTUALLY
INSTALLS BEHIND THE REAR BODY PANEL. NOW IF YOU WERE DOING A CONCOURSE RESTORATION OR IF YOU HAD A SUPER RARE CAR, YOU WOULD WANT TO GO AHEAD AND REMOVE THE REAR BODY PANEL AND DRILL OUT THE SPOT WELDS IN THE QUARTER AND INSTALL THE ENTIRE QUARTER PROPERLY. BUT FOR A BUILD LIKE THIS IT'LL BE ALRIGHT FOR US TO
JUST TRIM OUT THE NEW PANEL AND BUTT WELD IT RIGHT ON THE SEAM. ALRIGHT SO BEFORE WE CAN ACTUALLY INSTALL THAT QUARTER PANEL WE NEED TO ADDRESS THE WHEEL HOUSES. NOW THERE WAS SOME RUST ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE OUTER
WHEEL HOUSE RIGHT HERE, BUT IT'S JUST AT THE BOTTOM AND THE REST OF THE WHEEL HOUSE IS ACTUALLY IN REALLY GOOD SHAPE FOR A CAR THIS OLD. SO WE GOT THIS OUTER WHEEL HOUSE FROM AMD, AND WE'RE JUST GONNA MEASURE OUT, CUT OFF A PIECE, AND PATCH IT IN. THE PIECE IS GOING TO BE CUT A LITTLE LONG SO THAT WE CAN TRIM AND ADJUST IT ONCE IT'S ON THE CAR. IT'S A LOT BETTER TO DO THAT THAN REALIZING YOU'VE CUT YOUR PIECE TOO SHORT.
(TOMMY)>> WITH IT FIT WE CAN CLAMP THIS DUDE UP AND BURN IT IN. WE'LL WALK THE CLAMPS AROUND THE PIECE AS WE ADJUST IT AND GET IT ATTACHED.
AFTER SHE'S WELDED WE'LL COME BACK AND CLEAN IT UP. [ grinder spinning ]
(MARC)>> SOME DUPLICOLOR WELD THROUGH PRIMER IS A GOOD IDEA WHERE WE'LL BE ATTACHING THE PANELS. THEN WE'LL PREP OUR NEW PIECE WITH THIS PANEL PUNCH TOOL. IT'S A LOT FASTER TO USE ONE OF THESE, BUT OF COURSE YOU CAN USE A DRILL BIT IF THAT'S WHAT YOU'VE GOT.
(TOMMY)>> LET'S SEE WHAT OUR LINES LOOK LIKE. WELL THEY'RE IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE EXCEPT FOR RIGHT HERE AT THE TOP. NOW THAT'S A LITTLE BIT WIDER THAN THOSE STREET ROD GAPS, BUT THAT'S PRETTY CLOSE TO THE WAY THIS THING WOULD HAVE CAME FROM THE FACTORY. WE'LL GRAB A HANDFUL OF CLAMPS TO GET THE PANEL LOCKED INTO PLACE, AND MESSAGE THE METAL A LITTLE BIT TO GET A GOOD FIT. THEN WE'LL START SPOT WELDING IT TO THE CAR. FOR THE MOST PART WE'LL USE THE FACTORY SPOT WELD LOCATIONS BECAUSE WELL, WE KNOW THEY WORK, AND IT HELPS TO KEEP THE CAR LOOKING ORIGINAL. [ welder crackling ]
(TOMMY)>> WE'RE GONNA MOVE ON TO THE FRONT, AND AS YOU CAN SEE THESE OLD FENDERS NEED A LITTLE BIT OF LOVE. THIS THING HAS BEEN COATED ABOUT EIGHT OR NINE TIMES, PLUS IT'S GOT SOME CHEWED UP SPOTS ON IT. TO REPAIR THESE FENDERS YOU'RE GONNA BE SPENDING A
WHOLE LOT OF MONEY NOT TO MENTION THE TIME. SO IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS YOU'RE BETTER OFF TO BUY A SET OF REPLACEMENT FENDERS.
WE'RE GONNA GET THESE BOLTED ONTO THE CAR ALONG WITH THE HOOD. LET'S SEE WHAT WE'VE GOT.

THEN YOU'VE GOTTA CUT INTO THAT FRESH PAINT. SO PUTTING A FULL QUARTER ON THIS THING IS A PRETTY GOOD IDEA. ANOTHER REASON, OUR REAR WINDOW HAS A LOT OF RUST AROUND IT HERE AT THE QUARTER. SO THAT FULL QUARTER'S GONNA TAKE CARE OF THAT TOO. BEFORE YOU GET TOO SLAP HAPPY AND START SLICING AND DICING ON YOUR CAR YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE ADJACENT PANELS ARE ALIGNED PROPERLY BECAUSE THEY'RE GONNA HELP LOCATE YOUR NEW REPLACEMENT PANEL. USING A SANDING DISCS OVER THE AREAS WHERE THE SPOT WELDS ARE GONNA BE, WE CAN DIG DOWN UNDER THE PAINT AND MAKE THEM EASIER TO FIND. [ grinder spinning ]

ON SOME OF THESE WELDS YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU DON'T GO THROUGH BOTH LAYERS BECAUSE YOU WANT TO AVOID PUNCHING THROUGH THE BOTTOM LAYER. THAT'S WHAT YOUR NEW PANEL WILL NEED TO BE WELDED TO. BUT YOU CAN DRILL ALL THE WAY THROUGH ON SOME OF THEM BECAUSE THERE'S NOT METAL UNDERNEATH THAT YOU'RE TRYING TO SAVE. FOR EXAMPLE, THIS DOOR JAMB SUPPORT.

USING THE PNEUMATIC ONE FOR MORE DELICATE CUTS.
ALRIGHT, SO OUR QUARTER PANEL IS FREE NOW, ALL BUT RIGHT HERE WHERE IT MEETS THE ROOF LINE.
WE COULD JUST CUT IT OFF WITH A CUTOFF WHEEL BECAUSE THIS CAR'S GONNA GET A ROOF ANYWAY. BUT IN CASE YOU'RE JUST REPLACING A QUARTER PANEL, WE WANT TO SHOW YOU HOW TO SPLIT THE SEAM HERE. YOU COULD USE AN AIR CHISEL, WHICH WORKS FINE BUT IT COULD GET AWAY FROM YOU PRETTY QUICKLY, OR YOU

NOW IF YOU WERE DOING A CONCOURSE RESTORATION OR IF YOU HAD A SUPER RARE CAR, YOU WOULD WANT TO GO AHEAD AND REMOVE THE REAR BODY PANEL AND DRILL OUT THE SPOT WELDS IN THE QUARTER AND INSTALL THE ENTIRE QUARTER PROPERLY. BUT FOR A BUILD LIKE THIS IT'LL BE ALRIGHT FOR US TO
JUST TRIM OUT THE NEW PANEL AND BUTT WELD IT RIGHT ON THE SEAM. ALRIGHT SO BEFORE WE CAN ACTUALLY INSTALL THAT QUARTER PANEL WE NEED TO ADDRESS THE WHEEL HOUSES. NOW THERE WAS SOME RUST ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE OUTER
WHEEL HOUSE RIGHT HERE, BUT IT'S JUST AT THE BOTTOM AND THE REST OF THE WHEEL HOUSE IS ACTUALLY IN REALLY GOOD SHAPE FOR A CAR THIS OLD. SO WE GOT THIS OUTER WHEEL HOUSE FROM AMD, AND WE'RE JUST GONNA MEASURE OUT, CUT OFF A PIECE, AND PATCH IT IN. THE PIECE IS GOING TO BE CUT A LITTLE LONG SO THAT WE CAN TRIM AND ADJUST IT ONCE IT'S ON THE CAR. IT'S A LOT BETTER TO DO THAT THAN REALIZING YOU'VE CUT YOUR PIECE TOO SHORT.
