Today, we're gonna double the horsepower in our hauler

today on horsepower TV.

Whether your cars for show or for go.

Chances are you need a heavy duty ride. Like our horsepower hauler,

we'll pump some power into ours with a new computer module, rapid flow exhaust and even a propane injection system.

You won't believe the power gains we make on our

dyno

check.

Then it's off to East Tennessee for some high performance fun at the annual Bristol back.

So hang on for horsepower TV.

Hey, our horsepower hauler on loan to us from Smith Stokes Dodge out of Reedsville, North Carolina.

It's going back a little bit more.

That looks good.

Now, while we've got it, we're gonna personalize it just like you would your own with everything from wheels and suspension to even graphics. Yeah, but first we're gonna add more power. Now, most people don't think of a diesel as being a real performance platform, but we think that you'll be pretty amazed at how easy it is to turn one into a real torque monster

with just a few basic bolt ons from Bully Dog technologies. Now, anytime you're pulling a load torque is where it's at,

especially at low RPM.

Well, the first thing we need to do is get these outer rear wheels off. So this duly will fit the drums on our dyno Jet. Then we get our baseline

eight.

Ok.

Well, how'd it go?

Well, we expected 100 and 96 horsepower. Hey, you know, that's not a bad place to start. In fact, we're gonna begin our own horsepower hop up with this torque dog module. Now, this is a 50 state legal plug in chip that not only changes the timing of the fuel injectors, but it'll also introduce more fuel as the demand for power goes up,

just unplug the original wiring harness here at the back of the pump.

Then take the original pump plug

and connect it to the new harness,

plug the new harness into the back of the pump.

Then the new control module is Velcro to the top of the fuse box and the big gray connector plugs into it.

The two remaining connectors plug right into the engine transducer located at the rear of the engine block.

They're connected in a series with the original plug connected to the module harness

and the other plug going back into the transducer.

Well, it didn't take long at all. No, it's because you stayed out of my way. Ok. Well, let's make another run and see what we got here.

Well, all right. What we do? Hey, how about 239 horsepower. That little five minutes of work you did gave us another 43 horses. All right.

Now, let's see what happens when we get more air moving through the motor.

Ok. First, we're gonna replace the stock air filter with this high performance unit that features a reusable cotton gauze

element

and more surface area to let in more air.

Now, to increase the flow on the exhaust side, we're gonna use bully dogs four inch rapid flow system that

almost doubles the capacity of your stock exhaust. Now, it does that with these low angle mandril bins and well, let's check out this high flow muffler here.

Now, all this allows the turbo to spool up quicker and reduces exhaust temperatures by as much as 200 degrees.

Well, I got the lid taken apart here

and the elements out. All right, this one even looks better. It does. Ok.

Well, now I guess we can get on that exhaust,

man. I wish this thing could fit on our lift.

But you know,

that's one of the nice things about working on a truck is there's still plenty of room to work underneath.

Now, one of the biggest bottlenecks in the exhaust system is the down tube that comes out of the turbo charger. Just check out the difference between the stalker here

and the one that we're gonna be replacing it with.

By the way, one of the things that we did mention earlier is that the kit also comes with all new hardware

and that it uses all the original hangar points.

Hey, I got a good tip for you.

If you keep your partner busy working under the truck,

this installation only takes a little while and you won't even get your hands dirty.

Oh, yeah. Well, here's another tip for you. If you keep your partner busy polishing that stainless tip. Well, you'll stay out of your way and that's the real reason. Only takes a short while.

All right, now that we got this dodge duly breathing better. See what kind of numbers we make. I hear you.

All right. 243 that time, that's just four more horsepower at peak. But you know, I noticed according to the graph back there, we made about 12 or 13 in the lower RPM range.

Yeah. Now that's right where you need it though. Absolutely. Now we need you to stay put right now. We've got more ahead for our horsepower hauler. Stay with us.

May the best man win, loser buys dinner. All right,

later. It's a Hanson Elmore shootout on the quarter mile strip. A battle for bragging rights and the Bristol back.

Hey, welcome back to the shop and our diesel duly build up.

Well, so far today we've added 47 horsepower by installing our fuel injection module, performance inlet filter and high flow exhaust system. But we ain't done yet. In

fact, we're gonna show you how propane has a purpose beyond your backyard gas grill.

Yeah. And this propane charger system is really gonna make your diesel cook after all, propane is a higher octane fuel than diesel is. And when you introduce it into the intake track, well, the incoming fuel charge birds slowly and more completely and it's gonna give you more horsepower and torque.

Now, this kit from Bully Dog includes the tank hoses, hardware and the regulator.

Of course, we're gonna get started first by mounting up the tank.

Now, the tank comes with a universal mount on each end.

We're gonna go ahead and hang it

right on the outside of the frame rail here underneath the passenger seat.

Yeah.

All right. Now we're gonna position our main mounting brackets right here on these floor supports

that way we'll keep the tank close to the outside of the vehicle and keep our easy access to that fill port.

Now, in case you have any safety concerns, this tank is dot approved for highway use,

which means it has a high pressure pop off valve,

overfill protection

and thick cylinder walls for extra burst strength. Well, you ready to blow this thing up.

Give me a hand. Here you

go.

Next, we run this hose down through the engine compartment

and connect the other end to the tank

about the regulator solenoid,

then drill a hole in the air intake for the propane hose fitting.

En route the hose from the regulator

to the air inlet,

this pressure sensor is gonna activate the propane system once it sees seven pounds of boost,

now we're gonna drill and tap the intake right here so that we can mount it. But first, we need to remove these four bolts so we can get the intake off the engine.

Now, we also need a way to activate the system. So we've mounted this arming toggle in this dash panel. It connects to a switch 12 volt source.

Then back to that pressure sensor that Chuck's mounting.

Now from the sensor, it goes to our regulator solenoid

to get the most out of your system. You need to tune it for your own application. Now, you do that by making adjustments right down here on the regulator,

just screw in this adjusting screw

until the engine begins to run roughly,

then back it out a full turn.

All right, Joe, go ahead and hit it

good one.

In fact, 316 horsepower. Now, according to my math, that's a 77 more than last time. Wow. Now that's 100 and 20 more than our baseline, but there's more in store for our horsepower hauler. So stay with us.

Hey, welcome back to the final phase of our horsepower hauler build up.

Now, we've already bumped the horsepower of our Cummins diesel to 316 after adding a fuel injection module, air filter, high flow exhaust and finally that propane injection.

Well, now we're gonna throw even more fuel on the fire with these bigger injectors.

Now, they've been modified by boring Andy burring the injector tips to increase flow by more than 20%.

And of course, the pop off spring has been shimmed to raise the pressure of the needle on the seat and improve atomization

to start the swap. We first loosen the injector line mounts,

then the line retaining nuts,

lift the valve cover,

remove the injector retainer

and

the stock injectors.

Here's a little tip that'll make your life a lot easier. Put some petroleum jelly

right here on the injector

and that'll hold the washer in place while you're reinstalling it.

Then of course, you just reverse the entire procedure.

Well, the final bolt on for our duly today is this bully box which allows us to fine tune fuel delivery

and adjust our power output for all kinds of driving situations, whether we're towing something or just trying to conserve fuel. Now, it features digital readouts for everything from exhaust temps to boost. And after I get ours Velcro in place, we'll start installing the sensors for it

after drilling a hole in the turbo down pipe, tap it with a quarter inch pipe thread,

install the bushing

and exhaust temp sensor.

The boost sensor plugs into the transducer we showed you earlier.

Finally, it's powered by a 12 volt switch source here in the fuse box. Well, I'm finished under the hood, looks like we're ready for that last big run. Let's do it.

428 horsepower at the rear wheel. Now, our baseline was 196. So

that's a gain of about 232. Not bad for a weekend's work.

You know, the total cost for all these parts was about four grand or less than $17 a horse. Well, hold your horses because we got more show ahead. Stay with us, man.

Next cool show cars. A joint

autocross competition and down and dirty drag race all coming up from the Bristol Bank

horsepower happenings is brought to you by Wyotech, the nation's premier technical training school.

You know, the last time a 66

novel

was on this track was probably Curtis Turner in a smoky unit car, no doubt. Hey, welcome to Bristol Motor Speedway. You know, this is the kind of place you'd come as a spectator and watch the professional drivers behind the wheel. Yeah, but this is a weekend where you can get behind the wheel, bang some gears and have a heck of a time doing it. Welcome to the Bristol B.

All right, baby, let's go.

It was your one's way of celebrating its 30th anniversary. A roaring good time here in Thunder Valley. Open to anyone who loves cars and loves to compete

where fun comes first. Winning is a distant second.

Well, really anybody is eligible to come in. Have a good time. Uh, drag race, enter the car show go through the auto cross. Uh We love cars and trucks. It doesn't really matter if it's got four wheels and an engine. Bring it.

Now, the Bristol Bass show car competition is open to everything. I mean, everything from a 70 Chevelle grocery getter

to this Ram Charger replica that's still terrorizing the streets. He actually took a uh 64 ra M Chargers model kit, a 1 25th scale model and a graphic shop, scanned the, uh, decal

sheet into the computer, enlarged it 25 times and they had the right size big house for the car

running. The Auto cross may be new to a lot of muscle car guys, but it was a big hit.

And another way to have a shot at a Bristol Bash trophy.

Basically, you set up a real tight twisty course with cones and so you can go through those cones the fastest. Um, the beauty of it is the speeds are kept fairly low.

And if you do spin out or lose control of the car, you just take out a few cones. You don't really hurt anything

on the quarter mile strip. You can find everything from Arnie, the farmer Brewick putting on shows in his GTO

to bone stock ponies. There was a class for anything on wheels.

All right. Best two out of three you're on, you know, we couldn't watch all this drag racing action without getting involved with ourselves. So get ready for a Hanson and Elmore match race. You got that right. We borrowed a pair of these Blackbird Pontiacs from Carl Black in Atlanta, Georgia. These things are pushed as far as the warranty allows, evenly matched. I'm told, may the best man win loser buys dinner. All right.

All right.

I can't even see Elmore in my rearview mirror. He's so far behind me

first time. Generous. Don't worry.

Well, I guess Elmer was asleep when he went to, uh, that drag racing school over there in Rockingham.

I know that car is a rigor. He's on a diet anyway, isn't he?

That's strange.

Three.

Three.

Put it on him.

If it was a Ford, I could have beat. Oh, yeah. If it was a Ford, he'd have beat me.

Oh, well, there's always next year

and the folks at your one hope next year will be an even bigger festival of cool cars and hot racing.

One thing's important though, as long as people have cars, they're gonna wanna enjoy them and, and probably want them to go faster. I don't know about you, but when it comes to celebrating the high performance lifestyle, I say this inaugural bash was a big hit. Really? I had a great time, especially down there on a quarter mile. Now, here's our congratulations to the big winners

horsepower TV S Hot parts. A close up. Look at the latest in high performance hardware.

Well, earlier we showed you a propane kit would do for a diesel truck. And, well, here's another kind of a kit that'll really make your compact haul. Now, it's a universal nitrous kit from N OS and it'll feed engines from 1.5 to 2.5 L.

It's a dry manifold system that plumbs easily into your intake and also includes jets that let you tune for the horsepower level that you want. Now, if you want one of these, well, you're gonna have to pull about $500 out of your pocket.

Here's something that it might spark your interest. It's called a new vote coil power unit from B and M designed to increase the spark intensity of all inductive ignition systems. Now, it works on domestic and foreign vehicles with either single or multiple coils. It's computer friendly, easy to install with just three wires and at $230 pretty easy on your budget too.

If your early Camaro or Chevelle came from the factory with stainless exhaust. Well, here's an easy way to replace it.

This reproduction system from stainless works comes with CNC Mandril bends for low restriction and an original appearance.

Of course, they'll bolt right up to your factory cast iron manifolds and they also use all the original factory hangar locations.

The aluminized version will set you back about 550 or you can step up to stainless for 895. Well, I'm afraid that about exhaust. Our show for this time, but we plan to step up with another good one next week. Here's a look.

It's a muscle car makeover as we show you how to install new carpet, recover the front and back seats and replace all the trim. Plus, we'll show you how to dye the dash and other old pieces for a brand new look.

On top of that, we'll jump up the juice on our budget Honda with a high performance ignition system.

It's a rumbling Ramler build up starting with an A MC machine, 401 block

and hydraulic flat top at Cannes forged 10 to 1 pistons single plane intake at 950 CFM car

with the goal of hitting 500 horsepower on pump gas

and meet a father and four. So racing team that turned their action for racing into an amazing high performance parts distribution center.

It makes you feel kind of good knowing that there's, you know, thousands or even millions of people out there that like to do what you like to do and that we are a part of helping them achieve what they wanna do. That's

really good.

That, that,

that makes me feel pretty good,

pretty gratifying
