HorsePower Builds

We've got some big bad planes and some cool little rides all coming up

today on horsepower TV.

We'll use our horsepower hauler to show you how to make a graphic statement on your street machine.

We'll upgrade our Honda shifter with a cool short throw piece and take a ride on the wild side without even leaving the shop

right

cheek.

So hang on for horsepower TV.

Hey, man, what do you got there? Well, uh sleazy rider, what I got here is my latest ride. What do you think? Huh? Well, it looks like a mustang. It's not just a mustang man. It's a 94 GT that I got lots of plans for. In fact,

got a whole list of stuff we're gonna do to this thing here in the shop. Why don't we start off with some power? Hold onto your horses there, or at least your pony. We got a lot on our plate today already. In fact, while you were horsing around with this thing,

I took the horsepower hauler down to the paint shop and we need to get down there and give those guys a hand. I guess you're right. But I hope we ain't riding on that thing. Well, there's room right here on the side car, but lucky for you, this thing isn't street legal. So we'll take my

challe instead lead the way

we headed down to the PPG Training center to meet Paul stole a veteran graphic designer and painter.

Paul's developed classes on custom painting and teaches them at PPG training centers around the country.

He's painted a name for himself with his creative use of design elements, pigment and pin striping.

Paul honed his craft to a fine edge under the tutelage of paint masters such as Walt Pray, Bill Carter and Kenny Youngblood.

Of course, inspiration for his unique designs also comes from legends like Ed Big Daddy Roth and Steve Stanford.

All right. Show us some of the tricks of the trade here, Paul. Yeah, we got some different things over here. I wanna show you

this uh is a simple technique

where we just tear tape to get the design.

And then of course, this has got the Harlequin color on it which changes and flops

which really makes the flames look like they're coming alive.

It

is, looks like it's on fire, huh?

It's getting hot.

Speaking of fire,

what do you got down here? Well, where there's smoke, there's fire.

That's a technique that's just kind of hung around from the sixties. You just actually take the Excelan

torch and you light that off and,

and just put this excellent smoke on the panel and hope you don't burn the paint while you're doing it. Yeah, but it is fire. So

it is fire.

Hey, this is a nice one up here. I see a lot of that kind of technique I think. Yeah, that's become very popular now. Um kind of a, a real more realistic looking flame.

Uh

It's an air brushing process, basically start with a white

and

put candy colors on top of it. You kind of layer it as you go.

I like it. That is beautiful.

Ok.

Yeah. What about this down here?

Well,

we call this flames stone, a lot of texture there. Flames stone. You get that. This is what Fred and Barney had on their hot rod.

Still. No breaks. I guess you don't have to be between the rock and the hard spot to like it though. Huh? That's right.

Flames have been around a long time guys,

man. There's some really cool stuff here. All right.

Well, Paul, that stuff is really cool, but let's talk about our Dooley a little bit. What do you got in mind for it? All right. I brought some rendering so we can kind of give you some ideas of what we can do.

I got kind of a graphic design going on here with some grays.

I got a flame design going on and I've incorporated the Checker Board deal with that. It's pretty decent.

And then I got this flame job here. Kind of a graphic going into a flame. I got some tribal and traditional all work into one design and I put the Horsepower logo into this design.

I don't know about you, Chuck. But

I like this one. Me too. I think that's the one. Well, let's go light that baby on fire.

Ok. We're gonna start this off by making a pattern. I'm gonna use a three M white masking paper to draw my flame design on

once I have that where I want it, I'll pounce it with a pounce wheel.

We'll apply the paper up to the vehicle

and transfer the pattern using a fine artists chalk

and we'll mask off the flames using the three M blue plastic tape.

The reason I chose this tape is it will adhere better, especially where the chalk is on the vehicle

and it will hold up to the sanding process.

The next step is to sand the vehicle. I'll use a three M gray scuff pad.

Now it's time for color.

I've chosen the Deltron D BC base code clear coat system.

We'll start with a bright white

for a good base and then off the bright and bold chart,

we'll use a yellow and an orange to blend in to get our desired effects.

Ok? Looks like Paul's just about got our colors laid down and now is a good time for us to take a little break unless of course you like to watch paint dry

not hardly, but we're gonna sign our work right after this. So don't go away

later in the show some small rides that make a big statement on the streets before we shift our attention to an easy vote on inside our budget to

welcome back to Horsepower TV. And the PPG Training Center in Nashville. Now, Paul Man, I can't wait to see your handiwork here, but I guess now is the time for us to personalize the horsepower hauler? Got you covered. Chuck

had a computer generated mask made.

Oh, well, it's kind of hard to see right now, but I bet it'll turn out just fine. It's like magic.

We'll put this on, spray it and then we'll be ready for the clear coat. Well, there's no delay in the spraying. So I'm gonna let you get to work. All right. Get out of my way there. Bud,

man. That lame job makes this thing one hot hauler. Great work. Paul.

Thanks Joe. I'm glad you like it

now, Chuck. I know you like to tell the viewers at home for about 50 bucks.

Half an hour in the driveway. You can do one of these a little more work than that. A

lot more work, but you know,

whatever the time was, it was spent, it was all well spent and we couldn't have done it without you, Paul.

Well, thanks. You bet. Now we need to get back to the shop where we've got some hot new hoops to match our hot new licks.

You

drive

it back,

you driving it, Joe.

Watch out for the fence,

man. You talk about riding in a blaze of glory. You would believe the thumbs up. I got over here.

Well, I'm not surprised. Now, here's something that's really gonna set off. Our Haller's Hot, New Personality. The wheels that we're gonna use are 19.5 inch one piece, forge aluminum wheels. Now these are the thunder twos from A PP. Of course strength is where it's at for any heavy hauler. And we get that with these wheels plus the forgings eliminate pros

and the need for any welded or bolted joints. And as we all know

that's where a lot

air leaks and even fatigue cracks can get their start. Yeah, man, you forgot to mention though, this polished finish is gonna give us good looks as well as all that strength. Now for rubber, we're using toil hyper radios in a 225 by 7019 size. Now, these are rated 12 ply, which means we can haul a heavy load or pull a loaded trailer without much worry. Oh, by the way, the tread pattern is a good all weather design with low noise which really comes in handy on long haul.

Well, I'd say that we have the ultimate horsepower hauler now, a great stance, eye grabbing graphics and more than enough power to back it all up. You got that right. But we gotta get this thing out of the way and make a lot of room. We're gonna take some little rides on the wild side coming up. You don't wanna miss this.

Welcome back to the shop where we're about to show you how big high performance fun can come in small packages. Now, everybody's always looking for something a little different and, well, what we've got

are both little

and different.

For instance, Harley's are the hot ticket these days, but not everybody's got the budget or the ability to ride one.

They're a big bike with a big price tag,

but Feast

Eye on this Ridley bike here, 3/4 the size and all the fun. In fact, they've got the look sound and feel of a Harley with a handcrafted frame gas tank and fenders. Man. This is me, I can tell you, but

watch out, you're gonna end up writing a check. Now the engine is a V twin just like its Big Brother and it's

manufactured and designed specifically for the Ridley.

They're available with 1525 and 33 horsepower. And of course they all come with automatics to make them easy to ride.

Plus if you pop for the big engine,

you can cruise on one of these things at up to 75 miles an hour.

You can get them in several models including the sport here.

Speedster

and the fully loaded speedster RD.

Prices range from about 6800 to 12 nights.

Oh,

hey. Now, just check out this little pocket rocket from mid

south mini

moto.

Now, this Pint sized GP racer is manufactured by Grc and it uses a 40 cc two stroke engine that cranks out a little over 7.5 horsepower. Of course,

these things aren't street legal but you can race them on the track. In fact, they're built just like a real racing bike. Check out this rigid aluminum frame. It's got dual front disc brakes and another disk out back, plus real racing rubber on an alloy wheel.

Now,

the transmission is automatic just like on the Ridley. And

so is the attention that you're gonna get every time you ride one of these things? But how deep are you gonna have to dig into your pocket to get one of these rockets?

Well, pricing starts at about 1275 or

1950 for one. Just like this,

man. I'd like to say you look good on that thing.

I'd like to. But, oh, well, how do you like this custom one off mini bike built by Malo

Enterprises? Everything on this thing is hand fabricated from the handle bars down to the frame. Now it gets its power from a five horse Briggs and Stratton

and has a Go Kart style clutch for automatic operation. Now, this one's got a couple of unique options. I really like. How about this side car built from an old 7-Up cooler

and while it still keeps your drinks cold,

it also doubles as a seat for your passenger. Having trouble getting a passenger.

Got a built in wolf whistle.

Plus thanks to a frame mounted propane bottle and a pair of spark plugs in the fish tail exhaust. You can shoot flames and cook your lunch while you're cruising.

Now, since each one is custom built, the cost is up to your imagination and the size of your wallet.

Hey, hey, now that thing is hot in more ways than one. You know,

I've known a lot of guys that like to bench race from their bar stools, but now here's one that you can actually race. It's called the Bar Fly. And, well, it gives you a reason to do a whole lot more than just sit around.

It uses a chrome Molly tube chassis mounting a 3.5 horse Briggs engine with an automatic clutch. It'll reach speeds of up to 22 miles an hour and just in case you do race this thing, it has disc brakes, aluminum wheels with racing slicks and this Zoomy leather covered steering wheel,

of course. Uh, no drinking and driving with this bar still. But if you got an extra 1500 hey, you could be the next Jeff Gordon of bar still racing.

Speaking of which we got a pair here, uh, up for some hot laughs.

You bet I'm ready to mix it up. But hey, I don't wanna hear you crying in your beer when you go bottoms up. Ok. Lose your buy of drinks.

Oh,

hey, what do you guys

see?

Whoa,

cool.

Put your head

on it.

Well,

I gotta buzz off this bar stool without even taking a drink. But you know what? We need to take a little bit of a break, don't you leave your stool? We'll be right back. That's fine. That's fine. Come on, get out of here.

I already won already won.

Hi, welcome back to the horsepower shop.

See, I guess you've seen our little budget Honda before our goal with this project was to pump up the performance and appearance of this little tuer with a total budget of 8500 bucks.

And that includes the price of the car. And uh we spent a little bit on parts and so far they include this cold air induction, set up a header and free flowing exhaust. Plus we bolted in a performance ignition and a nitrous setup. Now, our latest edition

include a coil over kit that helped us get rid of a little bit of the altitude and pick up a whole lot of attitude. And finally we bolted up a set of these 17 inch rims and tires.

Now, after all that, we've still got $1225 left in our budget. Yeah, we're gonna spend part of that on a new shifter with more performance. You wanna make sure you're hitting every gear because, well, after all, if you miss a shift,

you lose face, you lose the race and, well, maybe even your engine.

So today we'll install this B and M short throw sports shifter. It has a stainless steel stick and a billet, aluminum pivot plate for solid mounting and to eliminate shifter slop.

Now, if you're working on a Honda, like this one, you're gonna have to get it up in the air so you can install that shifter and give yourself about 2 ft of clearance. So you got plenty of room to work.

Oh, and if you don't have a lift like ours, make sure that you use jack stand so you can work safely. And here's another tip unscrew that knob first, it'll make your job easier. Later on.

Once under the car, you can start by unbolting the exhaust flange, unhooking the exhaust hangar near the cat converter and lowering the exhaust system.

Remove the nut and bolt, attaching the shift lever to the change rod and lower it out of the way,

remove two bolts from the rear extension mounting rubber,

then remove the bolt, holding the front of the extension rod to the transmission.

Finally remove the extension rod and shift lever from the vehicle.

Well, now we can go ahead and remove the shifter from the extension rod here

and we'll clean up the shifter socket a little bit with a rag,

then give it a light coat of grease.

All right. Well, now that you got all the dirty work handled, we're ready for some nice new clean parts. Yeah, I can always count on you to show up when the dirty work is done. Well, our new shifter just slides into the socket like so

thanks to that grease

and boats up using the original hardware.

Now, back under the car, we're gonna slide the extension rod and shift her into place. Be careful here because the last thing you wanna do is rip that boot while you slide this handle up.

Now you can both exchange rod to the transmission.

Now, the kit comes with two sizes of bushings. So just choose the right ones for your application

and insert them into the bottom of the shifter.

Next, swing the change rod up onto the shifter

slide in the retaining bolt

and tighten it to 16 ft pounds.

Finally, both the exhaust l

back up and reattach the hangers.

That the final step in this shift or installation is the knob. And of course, we could have used the stock one, but instead we pop for this cool stainless and leather piece from B and M.

Oh man, that's gonna look good in there.

Now, this whole set up took us about an hour to install and t our budget for about 100 90 bucks 50 for the knob there and 140 for the shifter. Well, what do you say? We shift our attention to something else that's hot.

Oh, that's nice.

Horsepower TV S hot parts is brought to you by Wyotech. The nation's premier technical training school.

I guess nobody likes a consolation prize. Can't believe I said that unless it surrounds your shifter in style like these from rod doors. Now, they're made of a BS plastic that can be trimmed to fit the contour of your floor, then you can cover them in your favorite fabric, leather or vinyl covering. Now, options include everything from a shifter boot to well, cup holders. Of course, there's plenty of room left for power switches to control your doors, windows and trunk, but control yourself.

Prices only start at 99 bucks. Here's a plug for a split fire. They're in the gauge business. Now, in fact, they have a full line of performance instrumentation for your street machine, including this memory tack and gauges for everything from water temp to fuel level. Now, they can be mounted in a flat panel or in these colorful cups that can be coordinate to match your car's interior. Of course, they're hot but you'll be cool with a set of these in your street machine.

Well, here's a pretty cool way to pump up the water flow in your Chevy.

It's jags aluminum super duty water pump that flows up to 40% more than your stocker. Now, thanks to a low cavitation impeller, it reduces water temperatures up to 20 degrees.

It features precision oversize

bearings to sustain higher RPM s

and also has this built in stop to help prevent cam walk. Now, it's available in neither natural cast or Polish like ours here with prices starting at about 120.

Well, I guess we polished off another show, but here's what we got for you next week.

The Scarlet Stallion, our 1994 Mustang project car that's getting a much needed cat back exhaust

and a deep breathing cold air kit,

plus a bigger throttle body adjustable fuel regulator and even a high performance ignition

for information about the products used in today's show and more. Check us out online at horsepower tv.com
