We've got rare Chevys. We've got fast Chevys. We got Slick Chevy Show cars.
Hey, what else do you want from a Ford guy today? Huh?
Today on horsepower TV.
You bet it is whether it's a bracket racer. A heads up
diapers infused pro
outlaw or even a shiny shows. Stop and Concourse Beauty.
It had better be a bow tie at this Florida Power Party. The annual All Chevy Show.
Plus we'll show you what it takes to build a national award winning Chevy Show car
and discover how much horsepower you can actually pour in from a bottle.
So hang on for horsepower TV.
Yeah, you might be wondering what's a Ford guy doing that? An All Chevy Show down here in South Florida? Well,
I got six good reasons. How about the Miami Dolphin cheerleaders?
Yeah, this ought to be a good show.
Sunshine and Chevrolets make a great match here at Moroso Motorsports Park
and the variety of Bow
Tide powered platforms runs the Gamin
Mansfield's 500 horse Chevy powered 96 Cutlass has a pro stock set up to compete in the quick 16.
It's an indexed class where the dragsters may have the upper hand, I think the bunk today is probably gonna be in the low fifties, maybe a high 40 you know, which is gonna be,
it's gonna be tough for us because, uh, track conditions in the middle of the day get pretty slippery. So,
uh, dragsters have a little bit of advantage. They grip a little better on a slippery surface. Door car is much shorter wheelbase. Uh,
it's very tough to, uh,
you know, tune a car to a very slippery track. So it, it's gonna be a challenge.
He was right. Although Rob qualified for the leader of the pack was Kevin Jones who ran a 656 at 212 miles an hour in his 525 Q brail on the car's first trip to the str,
what's gonna be your game plan the rest of the weekend to win this thing.
Uh, we're gonna soften the clutch up a little bit and just let it eat through the clutch and hopefully it'll stick into the ground.
And if I have to, we get off the pedal
cruising the pits, we found Rebecca Skaggs, tweaking her altered Roadster she brought to compete in the Super pro class,
kind of like a, um,
a dragster, but it's a shorter wheel base
and the motor sits in the front instead of behind you.
And it is a Chevy motor, right? Yes, it is.
What kind a 454 big block
are you a Chevy person. Yes, I am. That's the way I was brought up.
My dream is to drive a top fuel funny car.
But that's gonna take a little more time and money.
You can find an endless variety of big and small block Chevy Motors among the competitors. But this Camaro caused a double take with its in-line six.
Anybody could build a V8.
Everything we've done is fabricated and uh a lot of hard work over the years.
Are you doing it
partially because of this guy over here?
All, all the reason why
I like the uh
technology that goes into
uh
making a six cylinder run
as good as a V8 1.
And over the years,
uh at this very track
in 1965 I held a Florida State record
with a six cylinder car.
We call this the original small block.
Better bring a whole lot more to compete in the heads up pro
alcohol class
enough to compete with James Clark's 97 Monte Carlo with a 707 nitro sped at
motor
that propels him consistently into the six seventies.
They say you're the man
to be,
you don't ever know in this minute you're gonna blow our car or turbo car. You never know. We'll lay on it pretty hard. The track got narrow groove in. I believe it will come around. We lay on it pretty hard.
We'll be pretty warm this weekend. What do you think about that?
I love it, man. We love it.
It's a car level.
I hope it does.
You know, we just wanna get our atmosphere in a bottle. You know,
anything goes and throw outlaw from dire
to blowers. But for Frank Seton's 632 Chevy powered wheelies, the choice is, well, none of the above I believe if you can't get it done with horsepower,
then you're not getting it done.
What's it gonna take to get it done today?
Probably. Uh, I would say, uh, high seven or high sixes would probably, uh, be your number one qualifier.
We're trying to get in the field that maybe mid sevens.
That's a, that's a nice good solid number for us. We're not pushing too hard.
Um,
I'm also only certified to go 750. So, uh,
so if you had more left, you don't, you can't go any faster, huh?
Well, technically I can't, no.
What if we don't tell?
We can't tell you this, West Palm's all Chevy Show is shaping up to be the best ever in more ways than one.
We'll be back with more of this annual bow tie bash right after this.
Something broke, smoke coming in the car. Oil, come in the car.
I
thought I better make it to the middle. Stay in the middle and I get the backhand spot out and win a
costly victory. Almost turns to tragedy at this All Chevy event.
And later in the show, can you actually gain horsepower by changing out lubricants.
The answer may surprise you. Stay tuned.
Hey, welcome back to more sunshine and Chevrolets here at Moroso Motorsports Park. Now, before we get back to the track for eliminations, let's check out some of the Chevys for show everything from this daily driven 61 impala
to the ever popular shoe boxes from the mid fifties. Man. What a collection. It's enough to make a guy wanna switch sides. Almost
the trucks seem to make the most graphic statements. Here's a tailgate that would make
Tusla trek envious.
Now, something's fishy about this multicolored machine though. Imagine using a fish tank to hold the water to wash your windshield.
But you gotta special love these bow tie rides from the fabulous fifties
except for the
tires and disc brakes. This 55 is bone stock
and to its owner Chevy Heaven never got better than this. The 55 I think is the supreme classic Chevrolet. Not
nothing wrong with a 56 or 57
but when you look at the shoe boxes, you gotta go with the first one. They did it right, right out of the box.
The owner of this 55 would basically agree. Gene Warm keeps the original sheet metal and interior in his 55 2 10 sedan,
but he dropped it four inches before dropping in an LT one engine
that's backed by a four L 60 trance.
The main thing that people I can't believe out of it
as the car weighs 3100 and 80 pounds and a vet is almost 3400.
So I'm lighter than a vet, but yet I'm getting the gas mileage and everything because of the modernization of it.
And you get a lot more attention. Oh, a heck of a lot more attention. Especially when a vet pulls alongside and I can blow him away.
Ok. Let's see who blows them away here on the strip because it's time for eliminations here at the Pepsi Chevy Show
in the quick 16. As predicted, the door cars were no match for the more consistent dragsters.
However, the winner proved there may be some truth to the old tortoise and hair story.
Richard Nations with his 540 cubic inch Chevy motor used a soft setup and consistent reaction times to take the win. The slower car is a little more consistent and lose control. We can step this car up and run a lot faster if we wanted to,
but that's not what wins the races out here. Those cars have a little bit more traction problems, the faster you go.
So if you're, uh, in that slow half, you know, you're gonna be a little more consistent on their 60 ft, a little easier to control.
Well, it looked like James Clark was in total control of the pro outlaw competition
with his first round run of 675 at 209 miles an hour
then came the ill fated semi final round when Clark faced off against Doug Hawes,
68 Camaro
behind that cloud of oil and smoke. Clark won the race but hit the wall inflicting fatal damage to his mighty car.
Something broke smoke coming in the car. Oil. Come in the car.
I thought I could be make it to the middle. Stay in the middle and I get it back in, spun out with the wall. It goes pretty far back in the, in the frame work. I don't know. I know we save it or not, you know, because we broke a lot of frame well, and everything and like to get bickle to rebuild it
and I'm just glad, you know,
putting it out,
everything's all.
So for Halloween, it was a free ride to the winner's circle and a pro outlaw championship
in the pro finals. Gary Ranno ran an 1197 against his 1190 dial in to take his well earned win.
And in the Super pro finals, Kenny Di
Lorenzo broke out but it didn't matter as Gary Unger's dragster runs a perfect 838 to take the top spot.
So this year's celebration is all over. But the Shatin, as they say,
a pretty good power party for the bow tie guys who came to play here in the land of Chevys and Sunshine
coming up, we'll explore this national show car champion
and take the four power horsepower challenge. No, run away.
Hi, welcome back to the horsepower shop.
Ok, time's up. What'd you guess?
1988 Beretta. Hey, you win the prize, whatever that is.
But I gotta tell you a Beretta never looked better than this national prize winner.
Let's take a little tour first that I pop and paint scheme.
Now, the base coat clear coat is called Signal yellow and it set off by those beautiful orange, red and blue graphics. Now,
this car's got the full Pro Street treatment with a body that's been sectioned and stretched, a full four inches.
The front wheels and tires are center line and Mickey Thompson sportsmen respectively.
By the way, those are funny car type wheels called Convo Pros
for rubber out back. We've got dot Slicks from Thompson
inside the cockpits got a full cage matching yellow, of course,
overhead console for switches
and upholstery is all gray Tweed
plus up front. There's a full brace of auto meter gauges.
Of course, to be a national show car winner. The undercarriage has got to be over the top as well. So let's check that out.
In fact, this thing's almost as gorgeous under here as it is on top.
It's got an Austin Ford nine inch rear end with a third brace.
The rear coil overs are from chassis engineering
while the custom four link ladder bars are from Gibbons race cars.
Now, Gibbons also fed
up the funny car tube chassis.
The tranny. Well, it's a TCI power glide with one of their sta converters. Oh, check out that moroso chrome Stroker oil pan
and those hooker headers.
Now, the front shocks springs spindles and bras are all from strange
last but certainly not least
this bad
Perretta is powered by a 562 Chevy big block with fully ported and polished iron heads.
The bottom end has a 4250 steel crank and trw forged pistons
that has a crate valve train and manly stainless valves. Now, this thing is fed by 2750 CFM carbs and that massive B and M 671 mega blower and an inter cooler
man.
You
gotta love that loopy sound even with carburetors.
Now, how much horsepower are we talking about in this blown Beretta? Well, it hasn't been on the
dyno but the owner estimates in the neighborhood of 1100.
Well, you've seen Chuck and I vote on blowers headers manifolds. You name it all in the name of making more power.
In fact, anything that gives you a few more horses is worth considering. So consider for a minute lubrication.
Now, on the average, you make 20 to 40 more horsepower on an engine
dyno
than on a chassis,
dyno like ours in the horsepower shop. And the reason is parasitic power losses or friction
and everything from the pistons, rods and lifters here in the engine
to the gear to gear friction. You're making your transmission and differential. So it stands to reason,
reduce the friction and you'll increase the horsepower from the fly wheel to the ground where it counts.
Of course, that's what synthetics are all about for engine transmission and rear ends. Now, these come from royal purple and they're used increasingly in a lot of race cars.
So what if you could add a few more horsepower to your street machine just by changing the lubricants?
Well, that's a challenge they made to us and one we're gonna accept.
Here's what we're using for our little test. Uh Basically stock 2000 Camaro that we borrowed
has an LS One engine and of course, a six speed tranny now we'll drain the engine, oil, transmission fluid and gear oil. Replace it with the royal purple stuff and see what happens. Oh, first order business though. Get a baseline on our
dyno Jet.
Ok. There's the number we got beat 302.4 horsepower. Good baseline. So now let's get this Camaro off the
dyno Jet and on the lift,
we'll get started out back by draining the differential oil.
Then when the 38 driver moved this plug in the back of the transmission to drain it.
And finally the oil pan plug and the oil filter.
Ok. With our cover back in place and all snug down, we can start pouring in this max
gel.
It's got a friction modifier for limited slip and locking differentials. Plus it has a high film strength,
it's non corrosive and satisfies GL four and GL five specifications.
Ok. The transmission is next and here we got a little clearance problem with the Camaro.
There's no way to directly pour fluid into that fuel hose. So we
gonna put this baby to work.
What it is is a 5 L drum and pump. We got from Trico
Manufacturing and it's gonna make this job a whole lot easier. Now, inside I've got Synchro Max Fluid, which is made for high performance transmissions that require
Mecon or Dexon A TF.
Ok. For engine oil, we're going with this five W 30
the motors where you see the most parasitic power losses. So Roy purples put a lot of work into their synthetic base oil and
additive technology.
Whole idea is to cut down on the friction and again, free up the horsepower.
Now the icing on the cake, no pun intended. This purple ice engine coolant additive can actually reduce engine temperatures by up to 10%
that frees up horsepower by reducing detonation.
Now you can use it straight with water for racing or with your favorite coolant water combination for the street.
I don't know about you but I'm about ready for another dyno run.
As they say, the dyno
don't lie. 3, 10.8. That's more than an eight horsepower gain. Not bad for a few hours work and well, less than 100 bucks. Well, stay tuned. There's more horsepower ahead. No, go away.
Some of the latest and greatest from the high performance aftermarket is just ahead on hot parts.
Horsepower TV S hot parts is brought to you by Wyotech.
The nation's premier technical training school.
Well, here's a little hot part from J ES that may spark the interest of you guys running 84 to 95 G. Mh Eis in your street machines.
It's their red hot coil and it works with both original and aftermarket remote. He I computer controlled ignition systems.
Now it features a brass terminal for optimum electrical connection
and a peak output. Well, it produces 49,000 votes. Got a price that might get your vote to under 35 bucks.
Chameleons may be famous for their ability to change colors, but now you can pull off the same effect with your paint jobs. This Mirage kit from Duple color will allow you to put a prismatic color effect on everything from helmets to motorcycles, bikes, car parts, you name it,
the color changes with a light source and the contours of the part that you paint.
Now you start off with their black base coat
at several coats of the color lacquer and finish the job with their clear coat.
Oh, it's available in several color choices and well, you may not believe your eyes or the price
$18 for the kit.
You know, we've used a lot of Flow Master parts on our show and today, one of the hottest tickets is our delta flow muffler with its super scavenging ability. Of course, the key to it all are three delta shaped deflectors inside the power chamber. And now you can get flow masters and handle all your performance exhaust system needs at your local Meineke Muffler shop
where you won't have to drain your wallet to get the results you want.
All right. That's it for hot parts. Now, look at next week's horsepower TV.
Chances are if it's got high performance manifolds and heads, it came from here,
we'll take you to California for a fascinating behind the scenes. Look at high performance parts in the making from the boundary through machining on the final testing on the dyno
Plus you'll follow an aspiring gearhead in training for a day to see what it takes to earn a degree in high performance here in the 21st century.
