Welcome to Horsepower and to the quiet southern countryside of rural North Carolina.
Hard to believe that 100 40 years ago there were battles going on as the north invaded the south.
Well, guess what?
Those Yankee invaders are back and this time they brought their most ferocious firepower
for a battle called drag racing.
It's always a party right here at the beach, my dragway,
good racing. We're good races.
I don't know, man, this is like around two. We hope we take them this time.
Yeah, I hope so. I hope we just uh give these guys some grits and send them on back home.
One thing
for sure, somebody's going home $50,000 richer.
It's a winner. Take all big dog shootout featuring some good old boy outlaw race regulars here in a defensive battle against a Yankee team headed by street car legend, Pat
who even recruited former foe Tony Christian from Florida. As a team member,
the challenge and the prize money were put up by five big dog Harris. He says the northern guys are gonna win, called us a bunch of dumb hillbillies because I've called him a bunch of dumb Yankees. So
it's been all in fun. But, uh,
there's some serious notes too.
We kept hearing rumors he's
putting,
you know, you gotta watch what you wish for. Right.
Overall, we've beaten these guys enough to know that we got a good shot at beating them at their own home track. And, uh,
it's probably gonna be more embarrassing for them when we do beat them here
down here that track
and they run the rules that they run here. They not run their normal rules and stuff. And this guy, I think it's gonna be tougher than they expect.
Don't expect cannons and gunpowder in this civil war. Instead, it will be a battle of horsepower and quick reflexes on this eight mile strip.
I think it's gonna come down to who keeps their head screwed on tight
and who can turn that button loose or let that clutch out
in Saturday's qualifying. It was a battle for eight spots on each team
and if you weren't in the mid fours on this eight final track, well, don't plan on making Sunday's big show
into the night.
The fight for number one qualifier ranges on
then in round two mil decker and his 63 bet draws. Rebel yells with this 437 run at 100 64 miles an hour taking the top spot.
You got an interesting little small block here that gets the job done. Tell me about this
thing.
It's a 463 and it's got ac Fe Splayed Valve, what they call a little chief head on it, which a lot of
people aren't familiar with. And, uh,
basically what it is the same, same head that comes off a pro stop truck.
So
it makes
roughly about 900 on the motor and we spray it with two systems of nitrous. And, uh,
roughly, we think it makes like 1550 to 1600 to be able to run
really
as good as it does.
But Decker's advantage was destined to fade in round three. The northern team's general Pat Hussey fires off this shot to capture the top qualifying honors with a 435 at 166.
Then teammate Mark Dantoni steps up to boast a 438 for the number two spot.
Did the South have a dog's chance of winning or would they rise again on Sunday?
We'll be back with the main battle in this North versus the South big Dog challenge.

I mean, we got them guys run good, we run good.
You know, racing anything can happen
but uh we got, we got good cars. I mean, I don't think they can beat all of us. One of us got to win. That's the deal. We're a team. So
we'll see what happens.
Yeah, $50,000 is a lot of money. And uh when you got that kind of money on the line and then like you say, a lot of pride also, you really wanna do your best. So we'll see how we do first run. I gotta run one of their fast guys. But
hey,
you know me, if I win, I'm happy if I lose.
Don't bring this damn microphone around me after I lose. All right, because I'm not the most jovial happy person when I lose. You know this. No, I'm done talking to you get the hell out of here
and after the South decker takes a fine run, it's
no time.
And Todd
Tter all puts Christian away with a 455 to put the South up by two.
Then
d'antoni leads Superman at the line also running a 455 to give the north its first win,
Tony
Genteel
powers past Keith Floyd to dot it up at two and two.
Then Chris Klein sends the batman back to his cave with a winning 455
and Mike Bell makes it south for north too here. Beating Bill Meadows,
the Spider Man more weaves his way to another South wind and the Dixie boys are dancing
in the final run of round one though. Bussey silences the rowdy rebels with a close 450 run over Rocky rain.
Now it's round two
as Moore faces a fiercer foe than Sherman's army getting out of shape while d'antoni posts a 443.
But the South rises to its feet again as Mike Bell knocks off the Northern General Mussey by 1/1000 of a second.
Now it's
row against Southern teammate Klein as Todd advances to the semi finals with a 443.
Finally, Decker versus
Gil
and the small block, Howard bet runs a winning 450 at 100 62 miles an hour.
Tony's out. Pat's out.
You're it, man. Is that put any pressure on?
Well, uh we're always used to a lot of pressure running the rounds. We always run.
Uh It's a little more pressure but I still only have to race one car at a time.
So whether there's five of my guys in or one of my guys in, I got one more round to win.
We're gonna go out there to win one round and hopefully we'll be in the final.
We're down to four now and Bell leaves first, but d'antoni plays catch up to win with a 442 at 100 67 miles an hour.
Then there's two Southern boys battling for the final spot as Tter
passes Decker winning by 100 with this 454.
Yeah, we're down to one and 11 and 11 in one.
It
can.
Oh,
so it comes down to one Southern racer,
Turo
and one Northern d'antoni
and Mark d'antoni gets a good light. A stout run and a 445 et winning the first ever Civil War of Outlaw street car racing.
You all deserve to work hard,
but I will promise you one thing
we will not win and I got these guys right out here and they all shake your head.

Our horsepower, Honda's got a stout motor. But now what happens when we put it on the bottle.

All right, 100 and 45 horsepower that sh
that's a solid place to start. And here we are back in the shop. Now, you might remember our project Honda here from last season after a series of budget bolt ons to improve the appearance and the performance of our 94 civic. Well, we decided to get serious with some under hood surgery.
In fact, we jerked the original 1.6 L engine
and replaced it with a used 1.8 L V
tech power plant.
Well, by now, you know, Chuck and me, we're always looking for more horsepower and today we're gonna go after it with this easy to install nitrous kit from N OS. This universal kit uses your stock timing and stock fuel delivery system and it's a dry system which means the extra fuel is introduced through the injectors as opposed to a wet system that relies on an additional fuel line, a nozzle or a spray bar near your intake in
Hey, good points. Now, of course, for the street, a dry system is also a lot simpler to install because there are fewer connections but from a safety standpoint. Well, it also reduces the chance of fuel puddling and nitrous explosion inside of the intake. Now, from a pure horsepower standpoint, though a wet system probably will generate a little more horsepower with the right tuning
either way though. The first deal is to get this bottle installed inside the trunk.
Of course, bottle placement is important. You want to make sure that the bottle valve is accessible
and that it's oriented towards the front of the vehicle.
Now, when it's mounted properly, this valve knob will be pointing up and of course, that keeps the siphon tube fully submerged in nitrous.
Next run the nitrous line from the truck and be sure to use a grom at any place. This line passes through a body panel and zip tie it down
to keep it away from heat and moving components.
I've already pre assembled the nitrous solenoids and the regulator to this T mount right here.
Believe me, it's a lot easier to do it off the car than on now, we're gonna mount this whole assembly right up here on the firewall, something like that.
That way we can connect this 2 ft line here to the nitrous spray nozzle, which we'll install in the inlet tube here.
The location of this nitrous nozzle in the pipe is determined by a couple of things. First of all clearance and second of all access to the nozzle's mounting collar.
Now, with that in mind,
it looks like right about in here is gonna be a good location.
Of course, it also looks like we're gonna have to remove the inlet pipe
to make drilling that hole a little bit easier
after drilling a hole in the inlet pipe
position, the nitrous nozzles to the opening faces the throttle body.
Now, using the T fitting here that comes in the kit, we're gonna pull vacuum from the intake plenum
and supply it over here to the nitrous regulator
and the fuel pressure regulator.
Well, we got the nitrous line connected to the bottle back there. Now, we can connect this into the solenoid, but first we ought to give it a good purge. Go ahead and hit it chuck.
Ok.
Now, we know it's free of trash and debris.
The N Os kit comes with an assortment of jets and a table. Let you know what power increases to expect.
We're going to go with this 32 here. That should give us an extra 50 horses.
One more thing to make sure the V
tech gets all the fuel it needs with that nitrous. We're installing one of Holly's in tank replacement pumps. Now, this thing will flow twice as much as the stalker
man. You're working pretty fast there. Yeah. You know this Honda, it'll be pretty fast too once we get this system installed. There we go.
Well, now all it's left is the wiring that is after we install this fuel pressure, safety switch, check this out. We're using an in line adapter here on the fuel line between the filter and the fuel rail and this switch just threads right into the shredded port.
Then we install the micro switch on the throttle body. So it's triggered when the throttle is wide open.
After mounting the power relay here on the firewall, you have four wires to connect
the orange one goes to the positive side of the battery.
The blue one powers up your nitrous solenoids while the green one connects down to the micro switch on your throttle. Finally, the red one connects to the arming switch inside the car
since we had Nitrous on this Honda once before, we still have this arming switch on the dash.
Now they all install pretty much the same way. Here's the one from the kit, it uses three wires, one's for a ground, one to a switch, 12 volt source and one to that relay up there on the firewall. Once that's done, you can reconnect the battery, open the valve and spray your way to more horsepower.
Yeah. Well, how much more power you're just gonna have to wait till after the break to find out. So don't go anywhere.
Ok. Welcome back. Nitrous is on and this thing's either gonna go
or blow. Let's find out which.
Wow, that was a kick ass pass. Thank goodness it was go instead of blow. How about 100 and 98 horsepower or about a 30% increase over our baseline? And you know what? There's still a lot more left in there. We can always change jets, but I think we're gonna keep what we got at least for right now. That's probably a good idea. You know, this Honda is pretty strong today but, you know, a lot of racers complain that the tracks around the country that, well, they shoot ducks down at the big end. What's all that about? Well, a high speed miss can
caused by a lot of things. But one of the first things I'd want to look at is the spark plug gap.
Now, you want them set at 30 to 35,000 because you know, the additional cylinder pressures generated by Nitrous can easily blow that spark out. If the gap set too wide, then I'd go ahead and take a look at the coil, make sure it's plenty strong and also the cap and the wires make sure they're in good condition. Hey, you know what, you might even want to consider an upgrade like this ignition that we've already installed in our Honda here.
And of course, there's always a problem of detonation which could be
caused by too hot a plug, too much timing or even too low of an octane rating or another cause could be too much nitrous or too little fuel, which of course makes your motor lean out. Those are all good points. But you know, the real bottom line is that if you've got a good ignition system and a solid fuel system, plus the right tune up. Well, Nitrous is a great way to pick up a bunch of horsepower without laying down a bunch of green.
You street riders out there should automatically take notice of this new shifter from B and M. It's engineered to fit everything from roadsters to coups and attaches directly to your automatic transmission with this adjustable mounting bracket. It features a gate style mechanism for solid shifts and the sticks available in 1215 and 23 inch sizes. Now, they're all made of billet aluminum with an anodized finish
