All right, we're up to 180. I think we're good to make a run. All right.
Hey, we're back in the horsepower shop at uh so is a project Blue Hair. Now, you know this car, it's a 1970 Nova that we played with recently after our buddy Lou and Muscle car gave it an LS two crate motor. Of course, in here, more power is never enough.
So we treated it to a hot cam kit,
some CNC machine heads with larger intake runners,
a racing design intake
topped by a Holly 770 car.
Now to give it fire, we used an MS D small block Ford distributor,
six A L ignition box and a blaster coil from the factory. The LS two is rated at 440 horsepower. The fly wheel
that equals about 400 at the rear wheels of this Nova. Let's see how much we gain after that little horsepower. Hop up.
All right, not too bad.
435 horsepower at the rear tires. Well, that's definitely not enough. So today we're gonna give all blue hair a little shot of Viagra. Now it's a cheater nitrous oxide system. From N OS. It includes this bottle,
nitrous and fuel
solenoids,
this injector plate
and the jets that'll give it up to a 250 horsepower shot. Now, we also stepped up for some added options that will show you as we go.
That N Os Cheater is a wet nitrous system as opposed to a dry. And basically, here's the difference.
A
dry system is primarily used in a fuel injected engine where the fuel and nitrous are delivered separately. Here. The vehicle's ECM regulates the amount of fuel going through the injectors
in a wet system, whether with a carburetor or EF I,
the nitrous and fuel are injected through the spray bar
at the same time.
Of course, they make wet systems for both EF I and carbureted engines like the Nova here.
Hey, thanks, Pal, look here, Mike,
install the bottle nut adapter
and these brackets. Let's give this thing a home.
This ought to be a good spot here since we have a gromit
hole already in place
to run our hose. Now, remember the valve knob needs to be pointed toward the front of the car.
Now can mark some holes for drilling.
Then after bolting down the bottle,
I can tighten up the bracket,
the injector plate goes on. Next. That is after we disconnect the throttle linkage,
the fuel line,
remove the carburetor
and remember this two inch spacer we installed earlier. Well, due to a lack of hood clearance it has to go.
Next, we remove the long carb studs
and replace them with shorter ones from the kit,
then lay down a gasket,
the injector plate with the N Os label facing up
another gasket.
And finally the car, well, the solenoids are died.
Notice how I just bolted this bracket up to our nitrous solenoid.
So now I can install this filter fitting in the inlet port.
Now make sure you use Teflon paste on these pipe fittings only
and don't over tighten.
Then we'll take this NPT compression fitting adapter
and install it here on the outlet side.
Now, loosely mount the nitrous solenoid near the nitrous or blue end of the injector plate,
install the jet you want to start with and we'll go with the 150 shot
followed by this extension two.
Now the fuel solenoid goes together the same way and mounts near the rear of the injector plate.
So with the nitrous bottle mounted up and our solenoids installed, we're just a few steps away from spraying our way to more horsepower.
How much
you'll have to hang with us to find out?
Hey, welcome back to horsepower. We all blue hairs getting a little shot of spray and it ain't the kind for grooming.
See, we're trying to get a little more power out of this LS two that loose shoved in this old nova and now that the nitrous and fuel cell noid are already on the motor. It's time to run our nitrous supply line starting at the bottle,
then we routed under the car, keeping it away from heat and of course, moving parts.
Now it's always a good idea to purge the line just to make sure there isn't any trash in it, either from shipping or from when the line was assembled. Go ahead and open it up, Joe.
Now, the next step would be to attach it to the solenoid, but we've got a little option to add first.
You bet it's a purge valve kit. And here's why it's a pretty good idea to have one
liquid nitrous can turn into a gas in the supply line when it's exposed to heat. So you activate the system and for a brief time, there's only gas going into the engine and not as much power,
but with the purge valve kit, you know, there's plenty of liquid nitrous at the solenoid. Every time you press that button,
we first install the purge adapter to the solenoid inlet,
connect the nitrous feed line to the purge adapter nut,
install the MP T adapter filter.
Then the purge solenoid goes onto the adapter fitting.
Next, use the 90 degree MP T fitting to install the blow down tubes to the outlet port,
the led is attached to the ends of the tubes. And if you're like us, you'll need longer tubes than those supplied in the kit. Since we've already got a high volume fuel system. Installed on the car, we don't need to run a separate pump for the nitrous. So, what I did is I tapped into the main fuel line using a dash six union with an eight inch
six spinning. This will supply our fuel solenoid with enough fuel. Now, the next step is to go ahead and install the activation switch on the car base using the supplied bracket from the kit.
Wiring for the system basically goes like this.
We've got ground wires from each solenoid bolted to the intake
two hot leads from each solenoid to the micro switch.
And from the micro switch, this wire goes to a switched 12 volt source for the purge solenoid wiring. We've got this wire we're using for a lead that's also bolted to the intake. This one goes to a switch inside the car and we're also using it to activate the led s that light up the nitrous. When you purge the system
here inside the car, we found a great place to mount the arming switch for the nitrous system
and the button for the purge,
we started with the 150 horsepower jets and retarded the timing two degrees for each 50 horsepower entry.
Finally, we worked our way up to the maximum 250 horse shot and the result 666 horsepower the rear wheel.
Now, of course, you can't expect the same results with every engine. The results will vary according to your displacement and other modifications. Now, what's the price of this extra horsepower?
Thought you'd never ask about 500 bucks for the N Os Cheater system. Another 160 for that led purge kit.
There's only one thing wrong with the Nova after the engine swap and all the work we actually did, the stock could no longer clears. So we turned to Good Mark and they sent us this two inch cal all steel piece for a replacement.
That
old blue hair is not quite the sleeper. She was before and even with this little extra bit attitude, nobody's ever gonna guess she's making this much power next up. We're headed to the ultimate cool car celebration at Road Atlanta.
This thing fits great. Even out of the box,
it's a, one of a kind car show.
It's a drag race. It's a cool place to have fun with your car and other car people,
year one offers this experience every year and this year it was bigger than ever before.
Everybody knows that car guys and are, are the coolest guys, I mean, and, and no disrespect to any other hobby or enthusiast. The, these are great people. They're fun to hang out with.
Uh, they care about fellow enthusiasts.
They help each other out when they break, they travel around the country together. Hot rod. People are really cool.
Serious car guys. The big deal here is competition for the year one cup. It's like
winning an Oscar if you're an actor and believe me, it takes an award winning performance to be in contention
for my money. It's hard to beat a tricked out Fox body like this one.
Arrest me read and best of all daily Driven.
Of course, you got to love this Chevelle with its totally slick and swanky styling
leather interior that looks like butter. A lot of under hood chrome and imagination everywhere. Well, like this gas cap that came off a Harley or what about this Plymouth Barracuda twin Carve hemi
under the hood and enough power to win the chassis dyno
contest with 987 horses. Say. Do you like show cars that dare to be different from the usual Fords, Chevys and Mo
cars?
We like this great classic.
What is it?
Well, let's ask a few younger visitors.
I don't know, maybe Chevrolet.
Absolutely no clue.
No clue.
That's kind of a weird one there.
That's a 1956 Studebaker champion.
It's got a custom frame Chevy Drive train. The body is stocked but everything else is modified. You're one of those guys that used to be different.
Yeah, that was the idea.
I've never fought beside another one. So that's a good thing.
We'll find out who wins this year's coveted cup in a minute,
but not until a little slipping and sliding on the wet auto cross
and a test of driver's skill and speed on the dry auto cross
the correct way.
And the not so correct way.
Well, everyone gets a chance to take in some parade laps on the two mile road, Atlanta road course
or for more excitement, you can ride shotgun with a pro driver who puts one of these Panos race cars to the ultimate test,
of course, to complete the motorhead menu. You've got to have a burnout contest.
This contestant put on the most colorful burnout show. Thanks to special tires embedded with pigment.
Well, even the midway is full of interesting stuff. And if you're a NASCAR fan, wouldn't you love one of these in your driveway? Street driven stock car? And I know it sounds odd but it's, it's the truth that's on the street. This fact the other day, my wife took it to the grocery store and I emptied the trunk. We build the steel bodies all by hand for it, assemble the car. We use all the dot And a se glass and, and lights and everything we have to do to make the street legal and make it safe.
Oh, I, I thought I was going to have to crawl through the window. No, not in this car.
In this car. You got to have a little comfort here.
Well, you get creature comforts, like hidden ac and stereo with the realistic looks and feel of a race car.
The cost.
Well, how does 100 grand feel?
Well, finally, the highlight of the day
when the top three show car finalists show up for the long awaited announcement. The 1955 Chevrolet Bel
Air Blue and Wanda Winters.
It was a 56,000 mile original car. It never been painted. Still had the original paint on it,
the more we went, the more we got into it, we done a billet grill for it. We done billet braces underneath is just as slick. So we ju we just tried to do the best we could with this car
way to go loot.
But you've only seen part of this straight gearhead weekend.
There's eight mile outlaw drag racing just down the road and we'll take you track side. So stick A R
hey, welcome to phase two of the year one experience. We're here at Atlanta Dragway for another
Oscar race watching racing the way we like it heads up outlaw style with some of the fastest eight mile cars in the country.
The fastest racer of the fastest class was Chuck Ols top qualifier with the lowest ETA 447.
He's one of the new kids on the
Oska block in the outlaw, 10 5 class drawn to the series from Maryland to compete with 10, 5 standouts like Steve, the Iceman, Kirk
Mike, the hit
hill and world record holder Turbo Tim Lynch.
I mean, we've won a few races and uh we do pretty well,
but uh you know, we know where we know where the recognition is and it's down south here to run with these guys. Great bunch of guys. We, we love to come down here and run and
this is where we want to be.
Here's another 10 5 car in contention, brand new paint job, but better yet brand new crew member. What about this guy, Ken? This is our, this is my mom and my wife's son, Cruz Rainwater.
He's uh four weeks old, his fourth trip to the track. It's actually his first real race weekend.
The other big story here at Atlanta Dragway was in the easy street class
number one
qualifier. David Reese broke his own record with a 489.
So you gotta wonder, can the cool calm racer from rock mot Georgia even beat that? We can go a little bit faster. We might, could probably go in 8586.
But I believe that the chassis and the tire is probably gonna start limiting us if we go much more than
in the heads up finals. Dustin Newborn needed a whole shot to beat Richard Reagan by 3/1000 of a second.
Meanwhile, Reese rules Easy street here in round two, hitting the tree, producing big power and keeping it all straight
in the finals. He lines up and runs a five flat line enough to beat Chad Henderson.
Yeah, we're just uh trying to
kind of race the point system, try to get our points at every race and
try to work toward the championship more so than the wins.
And uh we figured if we get the points, then the wins will come
in. Limited street, no limits to the good lights and great runs for points leader Darren Hoyle had some, I had some close rounds. Uh I had to buy first round, second round,
uh had a little better light to, to win
with the whole shot. Third round was really close and then the finals were really close. I mean, it uh it was good racing all day.
Hill's daughter had sights on our field microphone, but daddy was looking to break the Commerce curse and get a long awaited win here at this track. We struggled here, both, both races here last year and we, we were trying to get that, that off our back. We want to win this one and, and really get that monkey off our back this time.
Well, the monkey was gone as he'll beat Bobby Co in the semi finals by 1/100 of a second.
Then Chuck
S in the finals who had trouble getting off a lot,
but the points race gets even tighter leading to the next outlaw shootout in Montgomery down the road on horsepower.
Your engine actually needs two different coil outputs for the street and strip. Well, that's why this after burner switch
coil from Excel is like having two in one.
Now in the normal mode, it'll boost low RPM performance with good throttle response and fuel economy.
But in the switch mode, it'll boost high RPM performance by maximizing the voltage output.
You also get a switch location kit that allows you to change modes right inside the vehicle. Now, to get one of these, you'll have to switch about 100 and $30 from your bank account.
Earlier, we showed you how to make more horsepower using a nitrous cheater kit. Well, N OS, they also offer accessories to help make your system more efficient and user friendly. Now, this bottle heater helps maintain a consistent pressure by adding heat to the bottle, comes with everything you need, including a wiring harness. And
on the other side, we've got a remote bottle opener that allows you to open and close your bottle with the flick of a switch. So pretty much no more trips to the trunk, whether you're on the street or at the drag strip. Now, the bottle heater, it runs about 100 and 30 bucks while the bottle openers. Well, they have a few different models and they start at 100 and $89. How would you like to lighten up your bottom end? Of course, I'm talking about the one in your early small block Chevy that is Eagle now offers this 4340 steel
crank that weighs in at only 48 pounds
and it comes with 189 inch Honda type rod journals. It's internally balanced with a 3.5 inch stroke and they also offered a set of rods that'll match up with those journals. They come in lengths of six inches to 630 prices. Well, 833 for the crank and about three and a quarter for a set of these rods. Well, we hope you're set for another round of horsepower next time we'll be looking for you.
