(JOE)>> TODAY ON HORSEPOWER WE'RE GONNA USE THIS 572 BIG BLOCK AND THIS MODERN MUSCLE MACHINE TO TRY OUT A SYSTEM THAT'S BEEN CALLED THE CHEMICAL INTERCOOLER. IT'S ACTUALLY A NEW AGE VERSION OF A TECHNIQUE THAT GOES BACK TO WORLD WAR TWO.

THE REPUBLIC P-47 THUNDERBOLT, THE HEAVIEST, MOST EXPENSIVE US FIGHTER IN THE WAR, AND THE FIRST PISTON POWERED FIGHTER TO EXCEED 500 MILES AN HOUR. AFFECTIONATELY CALLED "THE JUG" FOR JUGGERNAUT, IT WAS FIRST USED AS A BOMBER ESCORT, BUT ALSO PROVED EFFECTIVE AT DROP AND ZOOM ATTACKS AGAINST ENEMY FIGHTERS. PLUS WITH ITS EIGHT .50 CALIBER MACHINE GUNS ABLAZE, IT WAS A FEARSOME FORCE IN GROUND ATTACKS. THE P-47 GOT ITS POWER FROM AN 18 CYLINDER TURBO CHARGED PRATT & WHITNEY ENGINE THAT PRODUCED 2,000 HORSEPOWER. IT BURNED 275 GALLONS OF FUEL PER HOUR, AND ITS RANGE WAS LIMITED. IN LATER VERSIONS THOUGH ENGINEERS INCREASED FUEL CAPACITY AND ADDED WATER INJECTION, WHICH ALONE ADDED 1,800 HORSEPOWER, AND IT GAVE THE P-47 20 MINUTES WORTH OF POWER OUTPUT FOR COMBAT. AT HIGH ALTITUDES THOUGH THE WATER WOULD FREEZE, SO THE ARMY CORP OF ENGINEERS DISCOVERED A 50/50 MIX OF WATER AND METHANOL WOULD NOT ONLY PREVENT FREEZING BUT HELP THE ENGINE PRODUCE EVEN MORE POWER THAN WATER ALONE. SO YOU CAN THANK THE P-47 THUNDERBOLT FOR ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE WAR EFFORT, AND THANK WATER/METH INJECTION FOR HELPING THE P-47 GET THE JOB DONE. HERE'S BASICALLY HOW WATER/METH INJECTION WORKS. A 50/50 MIX IS SPRAYED THROUGH A NOZZLE JUST BEFORE AIR ENTERS THE ENGINE. AS THE TINY DROPLETS GO FROM LIQUID TO GAS IN THE COMBUSTION CHAMBER, THEY ABSORB HEAT, SLOW THE FLAME FRONT, AND PREVENT DETONATION MUCH THE WAY HIGH OCTANE FUEL DOES. SO THE OCTANE RATING IS INCREASED 20 TO 25 PERCENT. PLUS A COOLER, DENSER CHARGE MEANS MORE COMPLETE COMBUSTION OF FUEL. WITH CONTROLLED WATER/METH INJECTION, MORE TIMING AND BOOST CAN BE ADDED FOR MORE POWER.

IT'S A TWOD MAP SYSTEM WITH BOOST AND FUEL INJECTOR PULSE WIDTH. IT ACTUALLY HAS A SCREEN ON IT THAT TELLS YOU THINGS INSIDE YOUR VEHICLE. THIS IS A SAFETY DEVICE THAT MONITORS FLOW AND IF EVER FLOW GOES LOW, IT'LL SEND OUT A SIGNAL TO MAKE YOUR TUNE SAFE. THIS IS OUR TWO AND A HALF GALLON TRUNK MOUNT RESERVOIR, AND IT COMES COMPLETE WITH BRACKETS FOR THOSE THAT WANT A LITTLE MORE FLUID ON BOARD.

(JOE)>> SNOW PERFORMANCE ALSO MAKES THIS STAGE TWO MUSCLE CAR KIT FOR NATURALLY ASPIRATED ENGINES THAT DON'T USE MAP SENSORS. WE'LL USE IT ON OUR 572.

(MIKE)>> WE HAVEN'T USED THIS ENGINE IN QUITE A WHILE. SO BEFORE WE INSTALL THE WATER/METH KIT, A BRAND NEW BASE LINE'S IN ORDER, RUNNING IT ON 110 OCTANE RACE FUEL AS WE'VE ALWAYS DONE. 700 HORSEPOWER, 620 FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE IS OUR BASE LINE. NEXT WE'RE DUMPING THE 110 RACE FUEL, AND FILLING THE DYNO FUEL CELL WITH MUCH CHEAPER 93 OCTANE PUMP GAS. FOR DYNO PURPOSES JOHN FABBED A PLATE TO MOUNT THE RESERVOIR AND PUMP, WHICH IS SPECIFICALLY MADE TO SUSTAIN HIGH HORSEPOWER. THIS DIGITAL CONTROLLER CONTROLS INJECTION WITH VACUUM INSTEAD OF BOOST LIKE WITH A SUPER CHARGER. THIS SOLENOID IS A SAFETY DEVICE THAT PREVENTS VACUUM FROM PULLING FUEL AT IDLE. THE ONLY WIRING NEEDED IS FOR GROUNDS, STARTERS, AND SWITCHES, AND PUMP DRAWS VERY LITTLE CURRENT. SO NO HEAT ISSUES EVEN IF YOU RUN IT ALL DAY.

(JOE)>> THEN THE LED LIGHT'S TYPICALLY MOUNTED ON THE DASH TO LET YOU KNOW WHEN THE SYSTEM'S INJECTING. AFTER SOME LOCTITE THREAD SEALANT, WE'RE INSTALLING THE LARGEST NUMBER SIX NOZZLE INTO THE NOZZLE HOLDER. THEN INSTALLING IT INTO THE PROVIDED BASE PLATE. NEXT THE GASKET GOES ON TO THE CARB STUDS, FOLLOWED BY THE PLATE. THEN ANOTHER GASKET, AND THE CARBURETOR. NEXT A LITTLE PLUMBING CONNECTING THE RESERVOIR TO THE SOLENOID. FROM IT A HOSE TO THE PUMP, AND FROM THERE OVER TO THE NOZZLE. THE BLACK VACUUM HOSE GOES BETWEEN THE PLATE AND THE CONTROLLER. NOW WE WANT TO CHECK THE GAP IN OUR PLUGS. IT SHOULD BE ABOUT 30 THOUSANDTHS FOR THIS SETUP. TIME TO LOCK AND LOAD WITH BOOST JUICE, SNOW'S 50/50 MIX OF METHANOL AND WATER. NOW YOU CAN MIX YOUR OWN AND IN A PINCH, WASHER FLUID CONTAINS METHANOL IN SMALLER AMOUNTS. IT MAY NOT BE AS PURE. OH, LAST BUT NOT LEAST, YOU NEED TO PRIME THE SYSTEM JUST TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS GOOD TO GO.

(MIKE)>> IT TOOK US ABOUT 25 MINUTES TO HOOK EVERYTHING UP IN REAL TIME. I'M BLOWN AWAY BY THE SIMPLICITY.

(MATT)>> THIS IS A THREE QUARTER RESERVOIR. IN ONE PASS A 700 HORSEPOWER CAR WILL GET APPROXIMATELY SEVEN QUARTER MILE PASSES OUT OF THAT THREE QUARTS.

AFTER BASE LINING IT AT 700 HORSEPOWER, WE SWAPPED THE RACE FUEL FOR 93 OCTANE, AND INSTALLED A SNOW PERFORMANCE KIT FOR MUSCLE CAR MOTORS. NOW THE BIG BLOCK'S WARMED UP AND READY FOR A FOLLOW UP RUN WITH WATER/METHANOL INJECTION.

(MATT)>> ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LETS TAKE IT TO 3,500. KEEP THE LOAD LOW, 3,500, AND TOUCH THE GROUND FOR FIVE SECONDS.

(MIKE)>> BY STABILIZING THE RPM AT AROUND 3,500, WE CAN TOUCH THE PURPLE WIRE TO A GROUND FOR FIVE SECONDS, AND THIS WILL SET THE ACTIVATION OF THE SNOW KIT TO COME ON AT THAT RPM.

(MATT)>> YEAH, LOOK AT! WE PULL 10 DEGREES OF TIMING OUT, WE'RE GONNA THROW METHANOL IN. LETS JUST RUN IT, GET A HORSEPOWER LEVEL AND A TORQUE, THEN START ADDING LIKE THREE DEGREES OF TIME.

(MIKE)>> SOUNDS GOOD! ON THE FIRST COUPLE OF RUNS, THE ENGINE WAS BREAKING UP AT ABOUT 6,200 RPM BECAUSE WE HAD AN OVERDOSE OF FUEL AND METHANOL IN THE CYLINDERS. SO FIRST A JET CHANGE. 92'S, LETS GO 87'S.

THEN THE SAME ENGINE RUNNING ON PUMP GAS MADE 33 MORE HORSEPOWER. NOW WE'LL TEST A SNOW SYSTEM THAT'S CONTROLLED OFF OF BOOST. THIS CHALLENGER'S GOT A SUPER CHARGED SIX POINT ONE LITER HEMI THAT'S BEEN HEAVILY MESSAGED WITH FORGED PISTONS, RODS, AND MUCH, MUCH MORE. SO IT OUGHT TO GIVE US A HIGH BASE LINE NUMBER, AND IT DOES. 523 HORSEPOWER, 493 FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE ON SIX POUNDS OF BOOST. LETS GET THE CAR DOWN FROM THE DYNO AND UP IN THE AIR TO INSTALL THE SNOW STAGE THREE SYSTEM. WITH A BLOWER OR TURBO UNDER THE HOOD, THERE'S NOT MUCH MORE ROOM FOR ANYTHING ELSE.

(JOE)>> THAT'S WHY A LOT OF GUYS WILL MOUNT THE RESERVOIR AND PUMP IN THE TRUNK. HOWEVER, WE DON'T HAVE TO. IN FACT WITH THIS DODGE CHALLENGER WE CAN GET A CLEAN INSTALLATION AND USE THIS JUG FOR SOMETHING ELSE BECAUSE WE DON'T NEED IT. SEE WE'RE GONNA USE THIS FACTORY WIPER FLUID RESERVOIR FOR THE WATER/METH MIX. AFTER DRILLING A HOLE IN, WE USED SOME PROVIDED SEALANT TO INSTALL THE STRAIGHT FITTING. OUR KIT CAME WITH A FLUID LEVEL SWITCH, BUT OUR RESERVOIR ALREADY HAS A FACTORY SENSOR TO HANDLE THAT JOB.

(MIKE)>> USING SELF TAPPING SCREWS, WE CAN MOUNT THE PUMP TO THE RADIATOR CORE SUPPORT. THEN GRIND A PLACE CLEAN SO WE CAN BOLT UP THE PUMP'S GROUND WIRE AND CONNECT THE RED POSITIVE WIRE. THE RESERVOIR CAN GO BACK IN NOW, AND NOTICE HOW IT'S LOCATED WITH THE FITTING ABOVE THE PUMP. NOW WE CAN RUN A HOSE FROM THE RESERVOIR TO THE PUMP AND THE OTHER END WILL GO TO THE INJECTOR NOZZLE. AFTER REINSTALLING THE INNER FENDER WELL AND THE WHEEL, WE CAN GO UNDER THE HOOD TO REMOVE THE SUPER CHARGER INLET TUBE. AFTER IT'S DRILLED AND TAPPED, WE USE SOME SEALANT ON THE NOZZLE ASSEMBLY AND THREAD IT INTO THE TUBE. REINSTALL THE TUBE AND CONNECT THE HOSE FROM THE PUMP.

(JOE)>> FINALLY THE DIGITAL VARIABLE CONTROLLER WE SHOWED YOU. EARLIER WE SENT THE WIRES THROUGH THE FIREWALL TO MAKE CONNECTIONS, INCLUDING THE 12 VOLT SWITCH SOURCE IN THE FUSE BOX. WE'VE GOT THE MODULE MOUNTED HERE ON THE CONSOLE FOR EASY ACCESS. IT USES BOTH BOOST AND FUEL INJECTION PULSES TO CONTROL THE WATER/METH INJECTION. NOW USING ONLY TWO BUTTONS YOU CAN FIND THE IDEAL CURVE FOR YOUR VEHICLE WHILE YOU DRIVE IT. BY THE WAY, IT ALSO WORKS WITH EFI ENGINES WITHOUT BOOST.

(MIKE)>> THE ONLY CHANGE WE MADE WITH THE CONTROLLER WAS SETTING WHEN THE SNOW KIT STARTS TO INJECT. THE BOOST REMAINS AT SIX POUNDS JUST LIKE THE BASE LINE. OH, THERE IT IS!

(MATT)>> THERE IT IS, YEAH, YOU CAN SEE, IT KEPT IT COOLER BY ABOUT 40 DEGREES.

(MIKE)>> WHICH GAVE US 41 MORE HORSEPOWER, 41 FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE. THAT'S AT THE TIRE, AT THE FLYWHEEL IT'S 60, 65 HORSE.

NOW THE COST, MAYBE A LITTLE BIT MORE BUT THE EXTRA PERFORMANCE IS WELL WORTH IT. AND WE REPEATEDLY USE OUR DYNOS AND EMISSIONS EQUIPMENT TO PROVE IT, LIKE TESTING ETHREE'S DIAMOND FIRE ELECTRODE SPARK PLUGS THAT OUT PERFORM STANDARD PLUGS WITH GAINS OF UP TO SEVEN HORSEPOWER. FOUR POINT THREE PERCENT IMPROVEMENT IN FUEL CONSUMPTION AND 43.3 PERCENT LOWER NOX EMISSIONS. THOSE TESTS WERE CONCLUSIVE ON GASOLINE BUT WHAT ABOUT THE NEWER ETHANOL FUELS LIKE E-10, E-15, E-85? (JEREMY)>> ONE OF THE PIECES OF HARDWARE THAT WE'RE TESTING IS THE ETHREE SPARK PLUG COMPARED TO THE CONVENTIONAL JWIRE TYPE SPARK PLUG. THE ETHREE, AS YOU KNOW, IS A VERY UNIQUE CAGE DESIGN, AND WE'RE LOOKING AT IT WITH THE CYLINDER PRESSURE EQUIPMENT TO LOOK AT THE BURN RATE.
