SO LET THE BUILD BEGIN ON THIS GOOD OLE FORD FAVORITE.

(JOE)>> WE JUST SAW HOW MUSTANG GUYS PLAY WITH MODIFIED 302'S, NOW TIME TO BUILD OUR OWN VERSION OF THIS FAMOUS FORD ENGINE. THE STRUCTURE FOR THIS BUILD IS A FACTORY TRIPLEX BLOCK. WE PAINTED THE VALLEY AND FRONT OF THE BLOCK WITH RED INSULATING VARNISH TO PROMOTE OIL DRAIN

BACK TO THE PAN. IT HAS A FOURO 30 BORE AND TWO BOLT MAINS. TO START WE'LL USE DUPLICOLOR LACQUER THINNER AND SCOTT'S PRO BLUE SHOP TOWELS TO THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE CYLINDERS AND THE BEARING SADDLES.

(JOHN)>> THE KIT CAME COMPLETE WITH KING BEARINGS. THE MAINS ARE A STANDARD SIZE AT TWO INCHES, 249 THOUSANDTHS. NOW YOU'RE GONNA WANT TO INSTALL THEM CLEAN AND DRY MAKING SURE THEY'RE SEATED AND EVEN WITH THE BLOCK. COMP CAMS LUBE WILL COAT THEM FROM FRONT TO BACK TO

GIVE US THAT SLICK SURFACE TO PREVENT ANY PREMATURE WEAR. OUR CRANK IS A CAST 9,000 SERIES FROM SCAT. NOW THE COOL THING ABOUT THIS IS IT'S A 331 STROKER CRANK THAT'S RATED AT 600 HORSEPOWER NATURALLY ASPIRATED.

THE ONE THING YOU DO NEED TO REMEMBER. IF YOU'RE GONNA PUT A BLOWER ON ONE OF THESE, THE EXTRA STRESS ON IT CAN ACTUALLY MAKE THAT RATING A LITTLE UNPREDICTABLE. NOW THE ONLY THING WE HAD DONE TO IT WAS SEND OFF OUR BALANCER AND FLYWHEEL WITH IT, HAD THE BALANCE TOUCHED UP.

INSTALL IT NICE AND EASY MAKING SURE THE CRANK IS EVEN FRONT TO BACK AND SIDE TO SIDE.

(MIKE)>> NOW OUR MAINS CAN BE LUBED UP NEXT AND DROPPED INTO PLACE. AND FYI, THE THRUST BEARING IS LOCATED IN THE CENTER OF THE BLOCK ON THESE ENGINES. APPLY A SMALL AMOUNT OF LOCTITE 5510 SEALANT BETWEEN THE BLOCK AND REAR CAP TO PREVENT AN OIL LEAK. ARP'S SEVENSIXTEENTHS BOLTS DRESSED WITH ULTRA

TORQUE LUBE WILL HOLD THEM IN PLACE. THEY'LL GET TORQUED IN TWO STEPS, FIRST 35 FOOT POUNDS

FROM THE CENTER CAP OUT. THE FINAL IS 70 FOOT POUNDS IN THE SAME SEQUENCE. USING A DIAL INDICATOR AND MAGNETIC BASE, CHECK THE END PLAY BY ROCKING THE CRANK BACK AND FORTH. SIX THOUSANDTHS IS RIGHT IN SPEC.

(JOHN)>> NOW'S GONNA BE A GOOD TIME TO GO AHEAD AND INSTALL THE REAR MAIN SEAL WE GOT FROM FEL PRO. LIGHTLY LUBE UP THE INNER SURFACE WITH SOME ROYAL PURPLE ENGINE OIL TO PREVENT A FAILURE.

THE LARGER LIP GOES TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. OUR CAM IS HYDRAULIC ROLLER EXTREME ENERGY FROM COMP CAMS. NOW THE DURATION AT 50 THOUSANDTHS IS 224 DEGREES ON THE INTAKE SIDE, AND 232 DEGREES ON THE EXHAUST. WITH A 112 DEGREE LOBE SEPARATION ANGLE AND LIFT WITH A ONESIX RATIO ROCKER ARM IS 555 THOUSANDTHS ON THE INTAKE, 565 THOUSANDTHS ON THE EXHAUST. NOW TO SAVE A LITTLE CASH WE REUSED THE FACTORY CAM PLATE. WE HAD TO MODIFY IT BY BEVELING THE BOLT HOLES FOR THE COUNTER SUNK HEAD TO BE ABLE TO RUN A NEEDLE BEARING ON OUR TIMING CHAIN. A LITTLE RED LOCTITE WILL HOLD THEM BOTH IN PLACE.

NEXT UP IS THE BILLET DOUBLE ROLLER TIMING

SET FROM COMP CAMS. NOW THIS CAN ACTUALLY BE ADVANCED OR RETARDED UP TO EIGHT DEGREES. THE PISTONS AND RODS ARE PART OF A ROTATING KIT. THEY'RE A FORGE MATERIAL WITH DUAL VALVE RELIEFS AND A 116-116-316TH RING PACKAGE. THEY COME WITH FLOATING PINS AND ARE HELD IN PLACE WITH SPIRAL LOCKS. THE RODS ARE AN IBEAM DESIGN AND THEY MEASURE IN AT FIVE INCHES 400 THOUSANDTHS IN LENGTH. WITH EVERYTHING LUBED WE CAN USE OUR ARP PISTON INSTALLER TO DROP THEM IN.

NOW THIS ONE'S MADE TO THIS PARTICULAR ENGINE'S BORE SIZE. BE SURE NOT TO KNICK THE CRANK WITH THE ROD WHEN THE ASSEMBLY GETS DOWN CLOSE THE JOURNAL.

TORQUE THEM IN ONE STEP TO 45 FOOT POUNDS.

(MIKE)>> OUR OIL PUMP IS A MELING HIGH VOLUME UNIT AND IT'S A POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT PIECE, WHICH MEANS IF IT'S TURNING, IT'S PUMPING. THIS ENGINE HAS WHAT WE CONSIDER A PRIORITY MAIN OILING SYSTEM. OIL COMES TO THE TOP THROUGH THIS GALLEY. THEN IT BRANCHES OFF AND FEEDS THE LIFTERS FROM

THE BACK TO THE FRONT. THE OIL TRAVELS THROUGH THE LIFTERS INTO THE PUSH RODS AND THAT'S HOW THE ROCKERS AND THE VALVE SPRINGS GET OILED. NOW THE FRONT LIFTERS ARE THE LAST TO GET OILED, SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THERE'S ADEQUATE PRESSURE THERE. SO WE'RE GONNA ADD THIS LINE THAT DIRECTS OIL FROM THE

BACK RIGHT TO THE FRONT SO WE DON'T HAVE AN ISSUE. THAT'S WHY WE PRETAPPED THREE HOLES IN THE

BOCK FOR THESE FITTINGS. NOW DON'T USE TEFLON. IT CAN HARDEN, CHIP OFF, AND CAUSE BEARING DAMAGE. USE A SEALANT LIKE LOCTITE 5452 MADE FOR HYDRAULICS.

(JOHN)>> OUR PICK UP CAN GO ON NEXT, FOLLOWED BY A SPLASH OF OIL ON OUR TIMING CHAIN. OUR SUMMIT RACING TIMING COVER IS NEXT. NOW WE HAD NITRO PLATE COAT IT WITH THE NEW TEFLON COATING THAT IS RESISTANT TO CHEMICALS. IT'S A MATCH TO OUR SUMMIT RACING PAN THAT'S DESIGNED FOR A FOX BODY MUSTANG IT CAME IN.

(MIKE)>> OUR SUMMIT RACING BALANCER IS SFI APPROVED,

HAS TIMING MARKS, AND THE WAY IT SITS IS NEUTRAL BALANCED. JUST ADD THE COUNTER WEIGHT AND WE'RE IN

OUR 28 OUNCE IMBALANCE. THIS TIMING POINTER WE GOT FROM SUMMIT RACING

WRAPS UP THE BOTTOM. NOW WE'VE ONLY BOT ABOUT $1,800 DOLLARS IN THIS BUILD THE WAY IT SITS.

NOW WITH STRENGTH AND LONGEVITY BEING KEY, THIS THING IS GONNA BE ABLE TO HANDLE PLENTY OF POWER IN NATURALLY ASPIRATED FORM.

THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT BUDGET BUILD, BUT WITH THE TOP END WE'RE GONNA THROW AT IT, THE BUDGET'S BLOWN.

(MIKE)>> OUR 331 STROKER PROJECT CONTINUES. NOW IF YOU'RE JUST CATCHING UP, DON'T EXPECT TO SEE A CARBURETOR ON THIS BUILD. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE LATEST EFI AND A TOP END DESIGNED TO MAKE HORSEPOWER. NOW IT'S A COLLABORATION OF PARTS BETWEEN HOLLEY AND TRICK FLOW.

(JOHN)>> NOW THESE TRICK FLOW HEADS ARE THE HEART OF THIS TOP END PACKAGE. NOW THEY'RE WHAT THEY CALL A HIGH PORT DESIGN.

NOW WHAT THAT MEANS IS THEY'RE A RAISED 87cc EXHAUST RUNNER. NOW THE INTAKE RUNNERS SPEC IN AT 192cc AND ARE IN THE FACTORY LOCATION. NOW THE COMBUSTION CHAMBERS ARE FULLY CNC'ED, AND THEY SPEC OUT AT 64cc. NOW THE INTAKE VALVE IS 202 AND EXHAUST IS AN INCH 600. NOW BEFORE WE CAN GET THEM DROPPED ON, WE'VE GOT TO GO AHEAD AND INSTALL THESE RETRO FIT LIFTERS. WITH PLENTY OF OIL WE CAN DROP THEM IN. THEY HAVE A TIE BAR TO KEEP THEM IN LINE WITH THE CAM LOBES. THE HEAD GASKETS ARE TRICK FLOWS. THEY HAVE A MULTILAYER DESIGN AND A 40 THOUSANDTHS COMPRESSED THICKNESS. WE REPLACED THE SPRINGS ON THESE HEADS TO AVOID COIL BIND WITH OUR CAM LIFT. THESE ARE BEE HIVES FROM COMP HELD IN PLACE WITH TOOL STEEL RETAINERS. THE HOLE IN THE HEAD IS A HALF INCH. ARP SEVENSIXTEENTHS BOLTS WILL HOLD THE HEAD IN PLACE BUT A LOCATING BUSHING HAD TO BE USED TO TAKE UP THE VOID AND KEEP THE HEAD FROM WALKING. THEY'LL GET TORQUED TO 70 FOOT POUNDS.

(MIKE)>> THIS HEAD AND PISTON COMBINATION WILL GIVE US A NINE POINT SIX TO ONE COMPRESSION RATIO, AND WE CAN RUN IT ON REGULAR FUEL, 87 OCTANE IN OUR CASE. NOW PUSH RODS ARE HEAT TREATED HIGH TECHS FROM COMP CAMS. THEY'RE A FIVESIXTEENTHS DIAMETER, HAVE A SIX-350

LENGTH, AND AN 080 WALL THICKNESS TO HELP ELIMINATE DEFLECTION. NOW THEY'LL FORCE THESE COMP ALUMINUM ROLLER ROCKERS UP AND DOWN TO CONTROL THE VALVE. THEY FIT A THREEEIGHTHS STUD AND CAN ONLY BE USED WITH A ONE-500 MAXIMUM DIAMETER VALVE SPRING.

POLY LOCKS WILL HOLD THEM IN PLACE AND WILL BE ADJUSTED A QUARTER TURN PAST ZERO LASH.

(JOHN)>> OIL PRESSURE IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, ESPECIALLY WHEN A MODIFICATION TO THE GALLEYS ARE MADE. BEFORE WE CONTINUE, IT'S PRIME TIME. THIS WILL ALSO TEST OUR LINE. 58 PSI LETS US KNOW WE CAN GO AHEAD AND CONTINUE.

(MIKE)>> WITH THIS LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD FROM TRICK FLOW.

NOW THIS THING HAS A BASIC OPERATING RANGE BETWEEN 2,500 AND 7,900 RPM. IT'S SETUP FOR MULTIPORT INJECTION AND THE PORTS MEASURE IN AT TWO BY ONE-200. IT COMES IN A CAST FINISH, BUT WE COULDN'T RESIST THE MATCHING TIMING COVER COATING FROM NITRO PLATE. IT'LL GET TORQUED IN A CROSS PATTERN FROM THE CENTER OUT.

(JOHN)>> TO PUT THE VALVETRAIN IN THE DARK A SET OF FABRICATED SHEET METAL VALVE COVERS FROM SUMMIT. CLEAR ANODIZING GIVES THEM THE SHEEN AND THEY COME WITH ALL THE HARDWARE. THE REST IS GONNA BE EASIER TO PUT ON IN THE DYNO CELL.

(MIKE)>> BACK ON OUR 331, WE ONLY HAVE A FEW MORE THINGS TO DO BEFORE WE THROW THE FUEL AND IGNITION TO IT. NOW THAT STARTS WITH THESE TRICK FLOW FUEL RAILS

AND 36 POUND INJECTORS. WITH LUBE ON THE ORINGS WE CAN DROP THE RAILS INTO THE LOWER AND TIGHTEN THE BRACKETS ON THE RAILS.

FOR PROPER CLEARANCE OF THE UPPER, WE HAVE TO USE A PHENOLIC SPACER SO IT CLEARS THE VALVE COVERS. AND HERE'S THE CROWNING JEWEL TO OUR 331 STROKER. IT'S A TRICK FLOW RSERIES UPPER THAT HAS AN RPM RANGE FROM 3,000 TO 7,750 RPM. IT'S GOT A 90mm THROTTLE BODY OPENING AND THE BLACK POWDER COAT FINISH GOES HAND IN HAND WITH OUR COLOR SCHEME. OUR THROTTLE BODY IS A 75mm FROM TRICK FLOW AND HOUSES THE AIR IDLE VALVE AND TPS. NOW AN ACCEL BILLITECH DISTRIBUTOR WITH A TFI MODULE CAN DROP IN NEXT.
