Previously on search and restore. Our team took the scenic route, cross country to the southeastern edge of the Rockies where we nabbed this army vet's Mustang.
Tim and Tommy brought it back for tear down fab and pink.
And today
the mechanics of this classic pony come together thanks to a diverse group of volunteers who've made giving back priority number one
from a quiet empty shop floor to one full of activity.
Progress on our 67 soared these last 10 days
build leader Tim Strange, laid out plans to build a one off modified Mustang from Paul Taylor's original $1500 purchase.
It's gonna be a slight mix between a modern pro tour car G machine. So it'll handle, have coil overs on it. Sway bars, street rod quality interior job. It's gonna be awesome.
Terrible dun mask can see those cheesy little reels on there.
Now that Paul's Mustang is unmasked, you can see with your eyes
what Tim had
inside of his head.
Everybody was doubting again. My color choices on this thing. But once they finally seen it unmasked again,
they go. Yep. That's awesome. Sooner or later they're gonna figure out that I might,
I guess it's just luck. Maybe. I don't know. Labor, love. You gotta love it.
No, you ain't gotta love it. You just gotta do it.
And of course, what search and restore build wouldn't be complete without lots and lots of sanding
and some more sanding
and then some more sanding.
I'm actually knocking the skin off since there's so much clear on it with some 600 grit. I know a lot of you at home are freaking out. What? 600? You can smell the fumes still coming out of the clear. Just from knocking that top skin coat off. Then I'll go 800,000, 1215 2025 and then 3000 grit
and then buff.
Wow. Anybody wanna come help wet sand, anybody
anybody at all?
Oh, Timmy. He gets a little sensitive sometimes whenever a person starts working on his paint job, kept on, kept on fooling with him because the boos
ever dipping
just a lot of fun.
Bless his heart. You just gotta
keep doing it because it's funny. Each and every time
I,
while Tim and Tommy are taking care of the body, Rick's taking care of the little details. Painting the big parts on the car is a lot of fun, but painting all those little parts is what fills in all those little holes.
Of course, we can't be putting any old regular run of the mill looking parts in this car. Now. Thanks to Rick's stainless tanks. We've got a brand new gas tank going in our 67
we got a complete rear end housing from Curry comes with all the axles and everything and Mike Galley put it all together, inspected it out for us.
Paul's Mustang is going to get their nine plus housing
a track lock differential and some 411 gear
along with 31 spine axles
stepped up and supplied the brakes for Paul's Mustang. Now, out back, we're working with a four piston caliber and a 12.9 inch two piece slotted and cross drilled rotor. Now underneath this hat is a hidden emergency brake assembly which makes installation on the rear really easy
up front. We've got a six piston caliper, the same type of two piece rotor and an aluminum hub. Now with this set up, Paul is going to have the option to take it to open track events and time trials and have enough power and brakes to be competitive.
Got the exhaust back from Nitro plate.
Last time we used them, we had their shiny
this time with all the black stuff that's going on this, we had them do it and they sat in black
and with that, this pony gets one step closer to hitting the road
and you can't do that without rubber Falcon tire sent in Justin Pollack who hand delivered a donated set of their 18 inch 450 twos.
They're a high performance Z rated tire for Spirited driving,
which is something Justin is very familiar with.
He's been a pro driver in the formula drift series since joining up with Falcon two years ago.
So, I see you're driving a, a Mustang there. What's all been done to it? Uh, it's a 2011 Ford Mustang. Um, it's far from stock. It's, it's running a 4, 10 cubic inch for
outs Ford Racing motor. Uh,
we got, uh, Andrews uh, gearbox, uh, winners, quick change
in.
I mean, it's, it's all the goods. The tires that we run are our stock tre but we run them at extreme pressures and,
and just everything is, is just
made to make the car slide. So the real question is how many sets of tires you go through in one event?
Uh Well, it's more like how many sets of tires we go through, uh, in, in just one battle. Uh, we'll go through a set of tires in two runs. Wow. A run can be as short as uh 15 seconds. So the longest I think is around 35 seconds. So in about a minute, we're, we're burning a set of tires. That's crazy.
Well, thanks for coming by.
I hate to see you leave clean. I'd like to get you working and get you a little dirty. So thanks for bringing the tires by and good luck at the next event if you guys need any help. Let me know. Ok,
coming up. It's the volunteer spirit that is driving this bill. And for these young tech grads working side by side with the pros is a chance of a lifetime. We'll meet them next
new day. And the usual tech center suspects are still hanging in,
working towards getting Paul's Mustang ready for the big reveal,
man. It's like a ghost town around here
kind of wondering if we're gonna be able to get this done on time. We could use a little more help. This car's got a good way to go. We could use some help for sure
when the word spread about our need for volunteers and what we're doing to help viewers finish their rides.
We've had a ton of skilled laborers step up and answer the call. We've even had some rookies pitch in.
It's
really cool to be able to work with all these new wild tech grads, man. They're ready to jump in knees deep in helping this thing.
Since Wyotech is a major sponsor of this build, we tapped six of their campuses for a dozen of their best and brightest graduates.
The education these young men and women received has prepared them for careers in the industry
including watercraft motorcycles,
hot rods and high performance engines.
Well, I took it a lot for me, all the automotive experience. I got automotive tech training, chassis fabrication and street rod metal fabrication, chassis design, suspension design and set up really helped me get a good job and start my new career.
I'm always down to help another vet
for me that sealed the deal that they were going to help someone that needed it or deserved. It was just perfect.
Mark Stacy and Christina Kramer are both from the Wyotech Sacramento campus. I hope to learn a few things. Couple tricks. It's a lot like an all star game around here. So these young wild tech grads get to be around all these guys that's been around.
You know that Steve Mac guy's been building stuff for like 85 years or something. You seen the logo on a shirt. It's even a covered wagon that tells you how long he's been building stuff
wild tech. Not only been sending all these guys, yes, they have girls go through there too. They sent Christina, she jumped in just goes to show you
you may have long hair, but if you put it up, it won't get caught in the creeper. Your actions will speak louder than your words. But if you're just speaking a good game and not playing it, then not worth much. I'll go take that steering column to Rick say, hey, Rick paint this
in order to match the rest of the interior and trim.
Rick's painting this idea at steering column black along with countless other odds and ends for Paul's mustang.
A slew of trim pieces still need to be prepped for powder coating
and Jessica from Powder X just brought us a brand new supply of powder.
Thank you very much.
We're going to take all the garnish moldings, all the taillight
bezels and a bunch of other little stuff, blast them, prep them. And then Rick's gonna have the kids from Wild Tech do all this really cool wrinkle powder coat that we can do here in the tech center.
We sprayed the entire inside of the car with DE I boom mat. Now this is gonna help keep the car cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Plus, it's gonna help enhance any audio that goes in the car like a stereo system and it won't let any of the heat from the engine or the exhaust come up to the floor. Speaking of the stereo kicker audio stepped up with some serious components and they sent John Myers to install a top notch system. The stereo system I brought with me is one of our new five channel. Really cool, really small
Sufi
we're putting in two of our 10 inch square woofers, two pairs of our top of the line component speakers. And of course, Clarence donated a head unit for this car that's gonna be Bluetooth and ipod compatible. This thing is gonna be awesome. It's gonna sound great and look great. Having this dude putting this stereo in this car is like having a dread drive your car. This guy is an awesome stereo guy. He's cutting, he's moving, he's making little panels out of fiberglass and everything. This is gonna have one awesome stereo in it.
Next,
more volunteers mean more trick parts
as the classic pony gets modern suspension, stay tuned
next few days on this thing, we're putting the rear end in the suspension's going in. The air conditioning is gonna get finished the wiring, the gauges, the interior guys are coming back glass will be in
and then hopefully we'll go,
That'll be awesome.
The optimum word here is hopefully
because we're a long way from
w
with all the horsepower, this car's got the old traditional leaf spring. They don't do a very good job of putting all that power to the ground. Darren Schilling, take it on
a
road and Mick
Hoang from Ride
tech A K A air ride technologies brought the hardware to fix that.
It's a bolt on triangulated four L
system for the front. We got our tube of their upper lower strong arm system and then we're using some of our new
uh coil overs on it as well.
We can take an old car and try to make it handle and ride as good as a new car.
They do all the air ride, adjustable suspension so you can pull your car in and drop it down and look really cool. Well, now they're getting into all this auto cross and pro tour and driving events that guys are getting out, driving, sliding around some corners and competing with each other.
So it's gonna handle and look cool. Our cars, we auto cross them, road, race them.
The employees get a beat and bang on them. We call it research and development, but it's just fun.
There we go
back upstairs. Tim does what Tim does.
Square speaker in a square hole. Who'd ever thought John from kicker keeps on kicking
Steve Mank and John start on the wire.
The only thing that slows this bunch down
is the arrival of new parts. Bond speed came through for us.
A
lot of people couldn't get these for us on time.
Look at that.
Yeah. Look at that big enough holes you can still see that well, with logo. Look at that.
Ok, I'll send them out and get them mounted.
Sounds good. Thanks man. But wait, there's more. We got this really cool. Hold on power rack and pinion from Unice
that steer tighter quicker and it's cut shiny parts on it. So that's a bonus and like a newborn baby, Tim likes shiny things. These stock hood hinges simply won't do
ring brothers. They're like the king of the modern street machine stuff. Look at that.
That's something that should be on a coffee table. All milled machine.
My Robocop
stuff,
no spring anymore. Gas shot goes right on there. But look what they come out with now, these awesome modern billet door handles. Look at that
ugly old original nasty,
like something to be on a refrigerator or something. That's gonna be awesome if you're paying attention and we know you are, you've noticed some satin black trim going on the car.
That's because a final trip to the paint booth is for a carefully placed
double code of satin clear.
What do you guys think? I need some opinions here. How are we gonna do this curve here?
Well,
if I run it along here,
you can't,
not on the edge of
anything here or there, you got to keep it off the line.
I don't,
you don't have to,
but I'm gonna go. Wow.
Is that a definition
you
don't
like?
Well, sometimes that your opinion is not good, Tommy.
That's very nice.
And after a group decision,
I don't look that bad,
Tim stands alone.
I'm gonna put one light coat on, give it some flash
and put another even coat on and hopefully that'll do it
after an overnight bait. Our friends from Hudson's Rod and Customs have returned and are the first to see it.
Just
leave
it like that. This
chain is sat
no color. No, nothing
like
that.
I like that look.
Looks good.
Kind of gives it a more detailed look.
I like that
enough of the praise will's ready to finish it off
from a shredded mess to a masterpiece of leather and thread. The men tackle the full on custom interior. Stay tuned
with last night's satin clear coat, dry,
approved and ready for a small Army Tim makes a list of today's marching orders with a little bit of fantasy.
His task complete the trim on the hood.
I gotta paint the color across the front
and I'm gonna go put those two colors on it clear. So the
copper and the green still needs rain across there and
then it just eases time because I can go take that and I'm not in their way and then they can work on that and then they can work on that and they can work on that and they can work on that. I'm gonna go work on this.
I
could come up with colors. I can see them in my head and I think they look good.
Sometimes people like them,
sometimes they don't.
I like them. So, what is that?
Artistic freedom, pride or arrogance?
Whichever will Hudson is a practitioner as well. I trust Tim's judgment. But on the interior,
I wouldn't trust in the green
a few weeks ago, they debated on the amount of green in the panels and stitching. Well,
do you see the green? Yeah, here's the green and it's almost to a white. He got what he wanted on the green stitching and we got what we wanted on the insert. So 5050 right now, this is kind of more of a uh machine look. These are from plate machine works. We took them Scotch Bride them down to give them more of a rough textured look. To match these titanium eyelets
for him to be a rough, tough guy. Supposed to be a rough, tough interior and Tim kind of wanted to sweeten us up on the green thread and we wasn't having it. Clayton machine works makes more than just shiny dod Dads custom interior hardware is owner Clay Johnson's artistic vision. You, you start with the concept and the way you get there is so varied. You know, because I, I kinda know what I want it to look like,
but it's not a straight path to get there. I wanted uh something that's pretty hard core, industrial, strong looking, you know, with kind of a race. Look if you will and they definitely compliment the door panels made by our returning Tinsmith Jamie talking
about. Look at that like that
dude,
you need to be doing fine art for a living, not car parts. And I like to see all the different people that are
professionals of their craft, you know, and all the pros do their thing and it's, it's enjoyable to watch everybody.
Logos. All right,
we're all good.
What we got here?
Got your seats,
got some minute green thread going on here. I think it's gonna read
a
lot more green once it's in the car
and it's not
overdone on it. You never get exactly what you asked for an upholstery guy. No. And it's cool because you're the artist so, well, there's the answer only in the Car World can. 10 artists stand at the same canvas and create a masterpiece. You think Paul
had any influence here? I just can't wait next week to the reveal. See what the guy thinks about it all.
You know, I'll never forget this. I'm glad that we did this for him to help him out. I seen the show a few times and I was really interested in how they were helping the people out.
And uh I thought maybe we could, we could chip into
good way for us to pull together and thank him for what he's done for us and give him something in return. Anything that we can do to help him doesn't make any difference what it is. We need to help them because
they're over there giving it our all for us.
And so that's what we need to be doing for them.
Well, the day is done
and Tim never got his,
but we did give you
Rob.
Rob.
Yeah,
I
can't hear

next time on search and restore.
It's a mad dash to get everything installed and running right before the Taylor family arrives for their big day. It's late nights and lots of troubleshooting all in hopes of rendering this soldier speechless
front to the table.
I did.
No, you were going straight and then all of a sudden you went to the direction

double code of satin clear.
Well, the day is done
and Tim never got his,
but we did give you
Rob.
Rob.
Yeah,
I
can't hear
you
next time on search and restore.
It's a mad dash to get everything installed and running right before the Taylor family arrives for their big day. It's late nights and lots of troubleshooting all in hopes of rendering this soldier speechless
front to the table.
I did.
No, you were going straight and then all of a sudden you went to the direction
