WELL TODAY WE FINALLY GET OUR HANDS ON ONE OF THE NEW
ECOBOOST F-150 PICK UPS TO SEE WHAT ALL THE FUSS IS ABOUT AND THROW SOME MILES ON IT.
NOW IT'S NOT EVERYDAY THAT WE GET TO JUMP IN A BRAND NEW PICK UP TRUCK AND FLOG IT AND SEE WHAT IT'S MADE OF, AND SO FAR THIS THING IMPRESSES. EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT A FULL LOAD PICK UP, THERE'S PLENTY OF OPTIONS, AND IT RIDES WELL QUITE FRANKLY JUST LIKE A CAR, AS DO MOST LATE MODEL PICK UP TRUCKS.
OURS IS A FOUR WHEEL DRIVE VERSION WITH THE XLT TRIM PACKAGE, BUT WHAT REALLY SETS THIS VEHICLE ASIDE IS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION COMBINATION, FORD'S NEW ECOBOOST TWIN TURBO VSIX. IN FACT, FORD ADVERTISES 23 MILES PER GALLON HIGHWAY SO
YOU'RE NOT COMPROMISING ECONOMY FOR POWER. THIS TRUCK RIDES ON GOODYEAR WRANGLER ALL TERRAIN TIRES
THAT ARE WRAPPED AROUND CAST ALUMINUM AND CHROME PLATED WHEELS, AND THE WHOLE PACKAGE LOOKS PRETTY GOOD. NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED ON THE F-150 FOR 2012. OUR TRUCK HAS THE SAME SHEET METAL AS ITS PREDECESSORS, WHICH SAW A MAJOR STYLING CHANGE IN 2009. NOW WE THINK THAT THE SUPER CAB MODEL, LIKE OURS, WITH THE FOUR DOORS IS THE BEST LOOKING WITH TONS OF PASSENGER ROOM, BUT IT DOES OFFER A COMPROMISE WITH THE LIMITED CARGO SPACE
OF THE SIX FOOT BED. BUT WHAT'S GOT EVERYBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS TRUCK IS THE TWIN TURBO VSIX ECOBOOST. WITH TECHNOLOGY BORROWED HEAVILY FROM FORD'S EXPERIENCE WITH TURBO DIESEL AND DIRECTION INJECTION APPLICATIONS, THE ECOBOOST HAS A COOLER, DENSER AIR CHARGE FROM THE DIRECT INJECTION, WHICH HELPS FUEL ECONOMY. TO GET THAT EFFICIENCY THIS ENGINE DEMANDS MASSIVE AIR
FLOW THROUGH AN EQUALLY LARGE INTERCOOLER THAT'S PLACED DIRECTLY BEHIND THE FRONT BUMPER. EVEN THE LICENSE PLATE IS MOVED OFF TO THE SIDE FROM THE FACTORY SO IT DOESN'T INTERFERE WITH AIR FLOW. THE END RESULT IS A SEAT OF THE PANTS FEEL THAT WILL FLAT OUT FOOL YOU INTO BELIEVING THIS TRUCK WEIGHS ABOUT 3,000 POUNDS LESS THAN IT DOES. IT IS QUICK! PART OF THE NIMBLE FEEL COMES FROM ROUTING ALL THAT POWER THROUGH A SIX SPEED CLOSE RATIO AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. A LOT OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY IS APPLIED HERE, INCLUDING ELECTRIC POWER STEERING TO ELIMINATE PARASITIC DRAG, WHICH GIVES US AN END RESULT OF 420 FOOT POUNDS AND 11,300 POUND TOWING CAPACITY.
WELL SO FAR THERE'S NOTHING WE DON'T LIKE ABOUT THIS TRUCK. THERE'S PLENTY OF POWER WITH THE ECOBOOST ENGINE, AND EVEN WITH THE RELATIVELY MODEST XLT PACKAGE THERE'S TONS OF OPTIONS. BUT JUST LIKE WAY BACK WHEN, THE ORIGINAL INTENTION OF THE
TRUCK WAS AND STILL IS TO GET SOME WORK DONE.
(RYAN)>> NOW SO FAR THIS IS JUST A BRAND NEW REALLY NICE AND PLUSH PICK UP TRUCK, BUT WHAT WE WANT TO DO IS TURN IT INTO A DUAL PURPOSE WORK AND PLAY RIG. THESE TRUCKS ARE KINDA EXPENSIVE AND THERE'S NO POINT IN BUYING TWO OF THEM. WE WANT TO MAKE THIS THING SOMETHING YOU CAN MAKE MONEY OUT OF. NOW SINCE IT'S A FOUR DOOR SHORT BED, WE MIGHT RUN OUT OF ROOM TO PUT TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT. WE'VE GOT A SOLUTION FOR THAT AS WELL. WATCH YOUR FEET, THIS THING'S NEW.

SO WE INCREASED OUR CARGO CAPACITY 10 FOLD BY BUYING A TRAILER.
WE PICKED UP THIS 12 FOOT ENCLOSED TRAILER FROM A LOCAL DEALER. 12 FOOT TO GIVE US PLENTY OF ROOM, DOUBLE AXLE FOR PLENTY OF LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY, AND AN ENCLOSED PACKAGE SO WE CAN PROTECT THE CONTENTS OF THE INSIDE. WE CHOSE THE DROP DOWN RAMP OPTION FOR ACCESS, AND FOR
EVEN MORE ACCESS THERE'S A SIDE DOOR AS WELL. THIS TRAILER LOOKS GREAT WITH THE TRUCK WITH DIAMOND PLATE FENDERS, DIAMOND PLATE STONE GUARD, AND MATCHING WHITE FINISH. BUT BEST OF ALL, IT PULLS GREAT. THE DOUBLE AXLE PROVIDE MORE STABILITY AND THERE'S VERY LIMITED WIND RESISTANCE EVEN THOUGH THE TRAILER'S QUITE TALL. BUT THE REAL HERO HERE IS THE ECOBOOST F-150. IT DOESN'T EVEN FEEL THIS TRAILER BEHIND IT. NOW GRANTED IT'S NOT FULL YET, BUT STILL SOMETIMES YOU CAN JUST FEEL IT KINDA WALKING BACK AND FORTH IN THE LANE BEHIND YOU. THIS, WELL IT'S JUST LIKE IT WASN'T THERE AT ALL.

THE PROBLEM THAT WE'VE GOT IS THAT THIS TRUCK, WELL THERE'S A SPACE CHALLENGE AND A TRADITIONAL TOOL BOX IS JUST GONNA TAKE UP TOO MUCH REAL ESTATE. WE FOUND A SOLUTION TO THAT PROBLEM WITH SUMMIT RACING. WE FOUND THESE WHEEL WELL TOOL BOXES FROM DEE ZEE. THEY'RE LIGHT WEIGHT ALUMINUM, THEY'RE LOCKABLE, AND THEY'VE GOT TONS OF STORAGE SPACE. THE BEST THING IS IT'LL LEAVE US ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF OUR TRUCK BED FOR ALL KINDS OF OTHER STORAGE,
AND THEY BOLT RIGHT IN. FIRST MOUNT THE BRACKETS TO THE BOXES AND MAKE SURE THE BOX IS LEVEL AND PLACED PROPERLY BEFORE YOU DRILL. OKAY NOW SINCE WE'RE DRILLING INTO A BOXED PANEL WITH NO ACCESS TO THE BACK SIDE, WE CAN'T PUT NUTS ON OUR BOLTS. SO WE'RE USING THE SELF DRILLING FASTENERS THAT COME WITH THE TOOL BOXES, BUT AGAIN, WE'RE EXPOSING BARE STEEL ON THE BACK SIDE OF THIS. SO TO PREVENT RUST WE'RE GONNA USE SOME LOCTITE RTV ON THE THREADS AS WE'RE RUNNING THE BOLT IN, CONVENIENT. NOW THIS TRICK ACTUALLY WORKS PRETTY GOOD, AND THESE BOXES ARE SOMEWHAT UNIVERSAL. SO YOU NEED TO PAY ATTENTION TO NOT ONLY LEVELING THE BOX BUT ALSO CREATING THE ADEQUATE CLEARANCE TO SAFELY OPEN THE TOP. ONCE YOU'VE ARRIVE AT THAT, WELL JUST LOCK THE BOLTS DOWN AND YOU'RE DONE, PERFECT. NOW WE KNEW ALL ALONG WE WERE GONNA PUT A WIDER SET OF WHEELS AND TIRES ON THIS TRUCK, AND BUSHWACKER HAS TONS OF OPTIONS FOR WHEEL FLARES. WE DECIDED TO GO WITH SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE SUBTLE THAT'S STILL GONNA GIVE US THE PROTECTION WE NEED AGAINST DEBRIS THAT MIGHT GET KICKED UP FROM THE TIRES. OF THE SIX FOOT BED. BUT WHAT'S GOT EVERYBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS TRUCK IS THE TWIN TURBO VSIX ECOBOOST. WITH TECHNOLOGY BORROWED HEAVILY FROM FORD'S EXPERIENCE WITH TURBO DIESEL AND DIRECTION INJECTION APPLICATIONS, THE ECOBOOST HAS A COOLER, DENSER AIR CHARGE FROM THE DIRECT INJECTION, WHICH HELPS FUEL ECONOMY. TO GET THAT EFFICIENCY THIS ENGINE DEMANDS MASSIVE AIR
FLOW THROUGH AN EQUALLY LARGE INTERCOOLER THAT'S PLACED DIRECTLY BEHIND THE FRONT BUMPER. EVEN THE LICENSE PLATE IS MOVED OFF TO THE SIDE FROM THE FACTORY SO IT DOESN'T INTERFERE WITH AIR FLOW. WE PICKED UP THIS 12 FOOT ENCLOSED TRAILER FROM A LOCAL DEALER. 12 FOOT TO GIVE US PLENTY OF ROOM, DOUBLE AXLE FOR PLENTY OF LOAD CARRYING CAPACITY, AND AN ENCLOSED PACKAGE SO WE CAN PROTECT THE CONTENTS OF THE INSIDE. WE CHOSE THE DROP DOWN RAMP OPTION FOR ACCESS, AND FOR
EVEN MORE ACCESS THERE'S A SIDE DOOR AS WELL. THIS TRAILER LOOKS GREAT WITH THE TRUCK WITH DIAMOND PLATE FENDERS, DIAMOND PLATE STONE GUARD, AND MATCHING WHITE FINISH. BUT BEST OF ALL, IT PULLS GREAT. THE DOUBLE AXLE PROVIDE MORE STABILITY AND THERE'S VERY LIMITED WIND RESISTANCE EVEN THOUGH THE TRAILER'S QUITE TALL. BUT THE REAL HERO HERE IS THE ECOBOOST F-150. IT DOESN'T EVEN FEEL THIS TRAILER BEHIND IT. NOW GRANTED IT'S NOT FULL YET, BUT STILL SOMETIMES YOU CAN JUST FEEL IT KINDA WALKING BACK AND FORTH IN THE LANE BEHIND YOU.
