(IAN)>> NOT TOO LONG AGO WE PULLED THIS BRAND NEW JEEP JK INTO THE SHOP WITH A RATHER UNIQUE IDEA. WE WANTED TO BUILD A JEEP THAT COULD CONQUER ANY TRAIL WE POINT IT AT, STILL BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT ON THE ROAD EVERYDAY, BUT AT THE SAME TIME BE ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE JK'S YOU'LL SEE ON THE TRAIL.
(CHRIS)>> AND WE HAVE DEFINITELY MET OUR GOAL SO FAR. EVERYTHING ON THE JEEP IS CERTAINLY DIFFERENT, AND IT ALL STARTED UNDER THE HOOD. A LOT OF GUYS DITCHED THE STOCK VSIX FOR THE POPULAR HEMI UPGRADE, BUT WE OPTED TO BOOST OUR JK WITH A SUPERCHARGER FROM RIPP MODIFICATIONS.
(IAN)>> THEN WE FINISHED IT OUT WITH A SET OF LONG TUBE HEADERS, FREE FLOWING CONVERTER, AND A CAT BACK EXHAUST SYSTEM FROM MAGNAFLOW. BUT PROBABLY THE MOST UNIQUE FEATURE ON THIS TRUCK SO FAR HAS TO BE THE AXLES BOTH FRONT AND REAR. NOW THESE ARE ATOMIC AXLES, AND THEY'RE KINDA A HYBRID TYPE OF AXLE. THEY USE A RAISED CENTER SECTION THAT USES A FORD NINE INCH DROP OUT. NOW THAT WORKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH A COUPLE OF C/V'S AND A SHORT AXLE SHAFT THAT DROPS THE OUTSIDE OF THE AXLE DOWN. NOW THIS GIVES US MORE GROUND CLEARANCE THAN A TYPICAL AXLE. NOW THE NICE THING IS, THE GROUND CLEARANCE IS WHERE YOU WANT IT, RIGHT AT THE PUMPKIN. THAT MEANS WE CAN RUN A SMALLER TIRES. WE PUT A SET OF 37 INCH TALL TIRES ON THIS RIG AND WE'LL GET THE SAME GROUND CLEARANCE YOU'D GET WITH A NORMAL SET OF 42'S AND A DANA 60. WE HUNG THESE AXLES ON A RUSTY'S OFF ROAD RADIUS ARM SUSPENSION SYSTEM, AND THEN PUT IT ALL UP UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK TO SEE HOW IT LOOKED. BUT THERE'S BEEN ONE PROBLEM. WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE THIS RIG SO FAR. THE REASON FOR THAT IS RIGHT HERE AT THE WHEELS. LIKE MOST MODERN VEHICLES, JEEP JK'S COME WITH A SPEED SENSOR AT EVERY WHEEL THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDS TO SEE A SIGNAL FROM. THAT'S JUST ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE GONNA FIX TODAY. WE'LL SHOW YOU GUYS HOW TO DEAL WITH THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM. THEN WE'LL FINISH OUT THE REST OF THIS TRUCK WITH NEW BUMPERS, GIVE US A PLACE TO SIT, AND THEN TOSS THIS JEEP ON THE DYNO TO SEE HOW OUR SUPERCHARGER FARES. THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE IN THE JEEP CONTROLS A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS. IT MEASURES EVERYTHING FROM THE TIRE PRESSURE OF ALL FOUR WHEELS TO THE WEIGHT OF THE PASSENGER RIDING IN THE FRONT SEAT TO DETERMINE HOW THE JEEP IS GONNA DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD. BUT WE'RE NOT INTERESTED IN ANYTHING LIKE THAT. WE WANT TO KNOW THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AT ALL FOUR WHEELS TO TRICK THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL INTO THINKING THAT THE STOCK AXLES ARE STILL UNDERNEATH OUR JEEP. AND IT ALL STARTS RIGHT HERE AT THE AXLE WITH SOMETHING THAT'S CALLED A TONE RING. NOW THERE'S FOUR OF THESE ON THE JEEP, ONE AT EACH WHEEL, AND THEY WORK HAND IN HAND WITH A WHEEL SPEED SENSOR TO DETERMINE HOW FAST EACH WHEEL IS TURNING WHILE YOU DRIVE THE VEHICLE DOWN THE ROAD. NOW THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR IS NOT THAT COMPLICATED. IT'S SIMPLY A SMALL ELECTROMAGNET THAT HAS TWO WIRES TRAVELLING BACK TO THE COMPUTER. IT'S MOUNTED VERY CLOSE TO THE TONE RING. AND AS THE WHEEL TURNS, IT ACTUALLY COLLAPSES THE SMALL MAGNETIC FIELD SENDING A PULSE BACK TO THE COMPUTER. NOW THOSE PULSES WORK HAND IN HAND WITH ALL THE OTHER PULSES COMING FROM THE FOUR WHEELS TO TELL THE COMPUTER HOW FAST EVERY SINGLE WHEEL IS TURNING. THAT'LL DETERMINE IF A WHEEL IS LOCKED UP WHEN YOU'RE HITTING THE BRAKES, OR MAYBE IF YOU'RE SPINNING THE TIRES, OR TAKING A CORNER TOO FAST. THE COMPUTER WILL TAKE ALL THAT INFORMATION AND POSSIBLY PULL A LITTLE POWER OUT OF THE ENGINE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN IF IT FEELS LIKE YOU'RE GETTING OUT OF CONTROL. NOW IN OUR JEEP WE NEED TO FOOL THAT SYSTEM. WE NEED TO BASICALLY PROVIDE THAT TONE SPEED AT ALL FOUR WHEELS TO GET THE COMPUTER THINKING BACK THAT ALL FOUR WHEELS ARE TURNING AT CERTAIN SPEEDS. NOW THERE'S A COUPLE DIFFERENT WAYS TO DO THIS. NUMBER ONE, YOU CAN GET A UNIT BEARING WITH A TONE WHEEL BUILT IN, LIKE THIS ONE HERE OFF THE FRONT OF OUR JEEP. THE TONE WHEEL'S BURIED INSIDE OF HERE AND THE SMALL LITTLE ELECTRO MOUNTING THAT BOLTS TO THE OUTSIDE. BUT WE DON'T WANT TO DO THAT BECAUSE WE HAVE FOUR DIFFERENT ROTORS AND HUBS TO DEAL WITH. NOW WE WENT TO A JUNKYARD AND TRIED TO FIND SOME OTHER TONE WHEELS. I'VE GOT ONE HERE OFF OF A CHEVY PICK UP TRUCK. THEN I GOT ONE HERE OFF OF A DODGE PICK UP TRUCK. AND WE WERE ORIGINALLY LED TO BELIEVE THAT THEY MAY WORK, BUT ONCE WE GOT THE AXLE APART WE COUNTED ALL THE TEETH ON THESE TONE RINGS, AND THE JEEP HAS 52 TEETH. THE CHEVY, WELL ITS GOT 54, AND THE DODGE TRUCK, IT'S GOT 58. NOW THE PROBLEM WITH THAT IS IT WON'T WORK. IT'LL CONFUSE THE COMPUTER BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING FOR THE SPECIFIC 52 PULSE FOR ONE REVOLUTION. SO THE ONLY OPTION WE HAVE ON THIS TRUCK IS TO HAVE CUSTOM RINGS MADE.

THAT DIDN'T WORK OUT EXACTLY HOW I PLANNED.
(IAN)>> NOW THAT MAY BE ONE WAY TO REMOVE A BUMPER, BUT IT KINDA PROVES A POINT. THE BUMPERS ON THE FRONT AND BACK OF THIS JEEP, THEY'RE NOT VERY STRONG. THEY'RE ACTUALLY JUST FOAM FILLED RUBBER. NOW THEY DO THAT FOR THE WEIGHT SAVINGS. IT'LL HELP WITH FUEL ECONOMY AND THE FACT THAT THE JEEP IS SOMEWHAT UNDERPOWERED WITH THE VSIX. BUT WE DON'T WANT THAT. WHEN YOU'RE OUT WHEELING, YOU WANT BUMPERS THAT ARE STRONG. SO WE'VE GOTTA CHANGE'EM. THESE ARE HEAVY DUTY REPLACEMENT BUMPERS FOR THE JEEP JK, AND THEY'RE FROM OVERKILL ENGINEERING. NOW THE FRONT IS ONE OF THEIR NARROW ROCK CRAWLER SERIES BUMPERS WITH AN INTEGRATED GRILL HOOP. IT'S DESIGNED TO GET THE OBSTACLE OFF THE BUMPER AND INTO THE JEEP'S FRONT TIRE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT CONTACTING THE BODY OF THE JEEP. THE BACK IS A FULL WIDTH BUMPER THAT'LL PROTECT THE REAR QUARTER OF OUR BODY TUB AND IT'S BUILT WITH AN INTEGRATED SPARE TIRE SWING AWAY HINGE SET UP SO WE CAN MOUNT OUR 37 INCH FULL SIZE SPARE ON THE BACK OF OUR JEEP. NOW WE DIDN'T PUT A LOT OF BODY ARMOR ON THE REST OF OUR JEEP TO KEEP IT KINDA LIGHT, BUT WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT BUMPERS, HEAVY IS WHAT YOU WANT.
PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST INVESTMENTS YOU CAN MAKE WHEN YOU'RE BUILDING A TRAIL TRUCK IS A GOOD WINCH. HONESTLY A GOOD ENOUGH WINCH YOU CAN PROBABLY GET A RENTAL CAR THROUGH MOST TRAILS. SO ON THE FRONT OF OUR JK WE'RE GONNA BE MOUNTING A WARN NINE POINT FIVE TI THERMAL METRIC WINCH. IT HAS A 9,500 POUND SINGLE LINE PULL THANKS TO THE 156 TO ONE GEAR REDUCTION IN THE PLANETARY MOTOR. NOW THE NICE THING ABOUT THE THERMAL METRIC FEATURE IS ON THE REMOTE THERE'S A SMALL RED LED. ON THOSE LONG STATIC LINE PULLS WHERE YOU'RE USING THE WINCH A LOT, IF THE MOTOR STARTS TO GET HOT IT WILL FIRST WARN YOU AND THEN SHUT THE MOTOR DOWN TO PROTECT IT, KEEP IT FROM GETTING BURNED OUT. AND ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS MOUNT IT ON OUR BUMPER. THE WINCH COMES WITH SPECIFIC MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS, BUT THE NICE THING ABOUT USING AN AFTERMARKET BUMPER IS IT COMES PREDRILLED AND IT'S MADE OF THE CORRECT THICKNESS STEEL FOR MOST POPULAR WINCHES.

NOW YOU'VE SEE US PUT SUSPENSION SEATS UP FRONT IN A FOUR DOOR JK AND JUST RECOVER THE REAR BENCH SEAT BEFORE. BUT NOW THANKS TO A KIT FROM MASTERCRAFT, WE CAN PUT FOUR INDIVIDUAL BUCKETS IN THE JEEP. NOW THE NICE THING ABOUT THAT IS WE'RE GONNA BE INSTALLING BAJA RS BUCKETS. NOW THAT MEANS THAT EACH PERSON WILL BE ABLE TO ADJUST THE SEAT BACK AND FORTH FOR A COMFORTABLE RIDING POSITION AS WELL AS PITCH IT FORWARD TO GET IN BEHIND THE SEATS FOR ITEMS THAT WE MAY HAVE STORED. NOW THE BAJA RS IS A TRUE SUSPENSION SEAT WITH A METAL FRAME DRAPED WITH PARACHUTE CORD TO ABSORB THE SHOCK WHEN YOU'RE ON THE TRAIL. NOW WE WENT AHEAD AND HAD THEM COVER THEM IN A NICE GREY TWEED AND BLACK VINYL. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE DIDN'T WELD THIS CAGE IN COMPLETELY. THE POSITION OF THIS BELT BAR IS NOT LETTING US GET THE SEAT BACK FAR ENOUGH. THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE. WE'LL JUST BUILD A NEW BAR WITH A LITTLE BIT MORE BEND AND TRY AGAIN.

BUT TO START BUILDING IT WE'RE GONNA START RIGHT DOWN HERE WITH A SET OF ROCK SLIDERS. FOR THIS BOTTOM RAIL OF THE SLIDER, WE'LL START WITH A PIECE OF INCH AND THREE QUARTER DOM TUBING WITH ROUNDED CAPS FROM BALLISTIC FABRICATION WELDED IN TO EITHER END. WE'LL ADD A SECONDARY RUB RAIL TO ACT AS A STEP AND TO PROTECT THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE ROCKER. OD TUBE CLAMPS WILL ATTACH TO THE UPPER PART OF OUR ROLL CAGE, AND ANOTHER PIECE OF INCH AND THREE QUARTER DOM IS BENT TO CREATE THAT UPPER RUB RAIL. THE JEEP'S BODY HAS A SLIGHT ARC IN THE BPILLAR. SO ANOTHER PIECE OF TUBING WILL BE RUN THROUGH THE TUBE ROLLER AND ADDED WITH AN IAD TUBE CLAMP AND TACKED IN PLACE. THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY IS THEN ATTACHED TO THE FRAME OF THE JEEP WITH SOME SHORT PIECES OF TUBING. NOW THAT MAKES UP THE ENTIRE BPILLAR PROTECTION PACKAGE, AND YOU CAN SEE THAT WE HAVE THE UPPER RAIL AS WELL AS THIS TUBE THAT RUNS DOWN THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE JEEP TO PROTECT IT FROM ANY OBSTACLE OUT ON THE TRAIL. AND THE BEST PART IS IT'S EASILY REMOVABLE. ALL WE'VE GOT TO DO IS UNBOLT THE OD TUBE CLAMPS AT THE TOP, SPLIT DOWN HERE AT THE BOTTOM, AND YOU CAN JUST SET IT ASIDE, PUT THE DOORS BACK ON THE JEEP, AND DRIVE IT EVERYDAY. NOW YOU DO NOT NEED TO BUILD A 100 PERCENT CUSTOM CAGE TO ADD BPILLAR PROTECTION LIKE THIS TO YOUR JK. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS GET OD TUBE CLAMPS THAT WILL FIT OVER THE FACTORY BARS AND BUILD YOUR CUSTOM ROCK SLIDERS.

SO IF YOU EVER PLAN TO CROSS WATER IN YOUR SUPERCHARGED JEEP, YOU'VE GOTTA ADD A SNORKEL. OUR SNORKEL KIT IS FROM RIVER RAIDER OFF ROAD. AFTER CUTTING A HOLE IN THE FENDER, THE ALL ALUMINUM SNORKEL MOUNTS OFF OF THE WINDSHIELD FRAME. FLEXIBLE TUBING ALLOWS THE AIR TO FLOW FROM THE SNORKEL TO THE AIR INTAKE OF THE SUPERCHARGER. NOW NORMALLY THIS SNORKEL KIT IS DESIGNED TO WORK WITH A FACTORY AIR BOX. YOU BLOCK OFF THE AIR INTAKE AND ADD THIS POWDER COATED SNOUT TO THE BOX TO HOOK THE TUBE UP TO. WE'RE MEASURING REAR WHEEL HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE. ( engine revving ) AND AFTER MULTIPLE RUNS, WE CAME UP WITH AN AVERAGE OF 250 POUND FEET AND 214 HORSEPOWER. AND THIS MAY SOUND LOW, BUT YOU'VE GOT TO REMEMBER, WHEN YOU'RE ON A CHASSIS DYNO YOU'RE GONNA HAVE WHAT'S CALLED PARASITIC LOSS IN THE DRIVETRAIN. ONCE THE ENGINE IS IN THE VEHICLE, YOU LOSE POWER ON EVERY PART OF THE DRIVETRAIN. THE HYDRAULIC COUPLER ON THE TORQUE CONVERT, THE LOAD OF THE ENGINE TURNING THE INTERNALS OF THAT TRANSMISSION, AND THE TRANSFER CASE. AND FINALLY POWER IS LOST RIGHT AT THE RING AND PINION AND THE EFFORT IT TAKES TO TURN LARGER TIRES. ON AVERAGE, A FOUR WHEEL DRIVE TRUCK IS GONNA LOSE 33 PERCENT OF ITS POWER INSIDE A TYPICAL DRIVETRAIN. SO OUR NUMBERS ARE WHAT WE EXPECTED.

(IAN)>> NOT TOO LONG AGO WE PULLED THIS BRAND NEW JEEP JK INTO THE SHOP WITH A RATHER UNIQUE IDEA. WE WANTED TO BUILD A JEEP THAT COULD CONQUER ANY TRAIL WE POINT IT AT, STILL BE ABLE TO DRIVE IT ON THE ROAD EVERYDAY, BUT AT THE SAME TIME BE ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE JK'S YOU'LL SEE ON THE TRAIL.
(CHRIS)>> AND WE HAVE DEFINITELY MET OUR GOAL SO FAR. EVERYTHING ON THE JEEP IS CERTAINLY DIFFERENT, AND IT ALL STARTED UNDER THE HOOD. A LOT OF GUYS DITCHED THE STOCK VSIX FOR THE POPULAR HEMI UPGRADE, BUT WE OPTED TO BOOST OUR JK WITH A SUPERCHARGER FROM RIPP MODIFICATIONS.
(IAN)>> THEN WE FINISHED IT OUT WITH A SET OF LONG TUBE HEADERS, FREE FLOWING CONVERTER, AND A CAT BACK EXHAUST SYSTEM FROM MAGNAFLOW. BUT PROBABLY THE MOST UNIQUE FEATURE ON THIS TRUCK SO FAR HAS TO BE THE AXLES BOTH FRONT AND REAR. NOW THESE ARE ATOMIC AXLES, AND THEY'RE KINDA A HYBRID TYPE OF AXLE. THEY USE A RAISED CENTER SECTION THAT USES A FORD NINE INCH DROP OUT. NOW THAT WORKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH A COUPLE OF C/V'S AND A SHORT AXLE SHAFT THAT DROPS THE OUTSIDE OF THE AXLE DOWN. NOW THIS GIVES US MORE GROUND CLEARANCE THAN A TYPICAL AXLE. NOW THE NICE THING IS, THE GROUND CLEARANCE IS WHERE YOU WANT IT, RIGHT AT THE PUMPKIN. THAT MEANS WE CAN RUN A SMALLER TIRES. WE PUT A SET OF 37 INCH TALL TIRES ON THIS RIG AND WE'LL GET THE SAME GROUND CLEARANCE YOU'D GET WITH A NORMAL SET OF 42'S AND A DANA 60. WE HUNG THESE AXLES ON A RUSTY'S OFF ROAD RADIUS ARM SUSPENSION SYSTEM, AND THEN PUT IT ALL UP UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK TO SEE HOW IT LOOKED. BUT THERE'S BEEN ONE PROBLEM. WE HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE THIS RIG SO FAR. THE REASON FOR THAT IS RIGHT HERE AT THE WHEELS. LIKE MOST MODERN VEHICLES, JEEP JK'S COME WITH A SPEED SENSOR AT EVERY WHEEL THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDS TO SEE A SIGNAL FROM. THAT'S JUST ONE OF THE THINGS WE'RE GONNA FIX TODAY. WE'LL SHOW YOU GUYS HOW TO DEAL WITH THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM. THEN WE'LL FINISH OUT THE REST OF THIS TRUCK WITH NEW BUMPERS, GIVE US A PLACE TO SIT, AND THEN TOSS THIS JEEP ON THE DYNO TO SEE HOW OUR SUPERCHARGER FARES. THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE IN THE JEEP CONTROLS A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS. IT MEASURES EVERYTHING FROM THE TIRE PRESSURE OF ALL FOUR WHEELS TO THE WEIGHT OF THE PASSENGER RIDING IN THE FRONT SEAT TO DETERMINE HOW THE JEEP IS GONNA DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD. BUT WE'RE NOT INTERESTED IN ANYTHING LIKE THAT. WE WANT TO KNOW THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AT ALL FOUR WHEELS TO TRICK THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL INTO THINKING THAT THE STOCK AXLES ARE STILL UNDERNEATH OUR JEEP. AND IT ALL STARTS RIGHT HERE AT THE AXLE WITH SOMETHING THAT'S CALLED A TONE RING. NOW THERE'S FOUR OF THESE ON THE JEEP, ONE AT EACH WHEEL, AND THEY WORK HAND IN HAND WITH A WHEEL SPEED SENSOR TO DETERMINE HOW FAST EACH WHEEL IS TURNING WHILE YOU DRIVE THE VEHICLE DOWN THE ROAD. NOW THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR IS NOT THAT COMPLICATED. IT'S SIMPLY A SMALL ELECTROMAGNET THAT HAS TWO WIRES TRAVELLING BACK TO THE COMPUTER. IT'S MOUNTED VERY CLOSE TO THE TONE RING. AND AS THE WHEEL TURNS, IT ACTUALLY COLLAPSES THE SMALL MAGNETIC FIELD SENDING A PULSE BACK TO THE COMPUTER. NOW THOSE PULSES WORK HAND IN HAND WITH ALL THE OTHER PULSES COMING FROM THE FOUR WHEELS TO TELL THE COMPUTER HOW FAST EVERY SINGLE WHEEL IS TURNING. THAT'LL DETERMINE IF A WHEEL IS LOCKED UP WHEN YOU'RE HITTING THE BRAKES, OR MAYBE IF YOU'RE SPINNING THE TIRES, OR TAKING A CORNER TOO FAST. THE COMPUTER WILL TAKE ALL THAT INFORMATION AND POSSIBLY PULL A LITTLE POWER OUT OF THE ENGINE TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN IF IT FEELS LIKE YOU'RE GETTING OUT OF CONTROL. NOW IN OUR JEEP WE NEED TO FOOL THAT SYSTEM. WE NEED TO BASICALLY PROVIDE THAT TONE SPEED AT ALL FOUR WHEELS TO GET THE COMPUTER THINKING BACK THAT ALL FOUR WHEELS ARE TURNING AT CERTAIN SPEEDS. NOW THERE'S A COUPLE DIFFERENT WAYS TO DO THIS. NUMBER ONE, YOU CAN GET A UNIT BEARING WITH A TONE WHEEL BUILT IN, LIKE THIS ONE HERE OFF THE FRONT OF OUR JEEP. THE TONE WHEEL'S BURIED INSIDE OF HERE AND THE SMALL LITTLE ELECTRO MOUNTING THAT BOLTS TO THE OUTSIDE. BUT WE DON'T WANT TO DO THAT BECAUSE WE HAVE FOUR DIFFERENT ROTORS AND HUBS TO DEAL WITH. NOW WE WENT TO A JUNKYARD AND TRIED TO FIND SOME OTHER TONE WHEELS. I'VE GOT ONE HERE OFF OF A CHEVY PICK UP TRUCK. THEN I GOT ONE HERE OFF OF A DODGE PICK UP TRUCK. AND WE WERE ORIGINALLY LED TO BELIEVE THAT THEY MAY WORK, BUT ONCE WE GOT THE AXLE APART WE COUNTED ALL THE TEETH ON THESE TONE RINGS, AND THE JEEP HAS 52 TEETH. THE CHEVY, WELL ITS GOT 54, AND THE DODGE TRUCK, IT'S GOT 58. NOW THE PROBLEM WITH THAT IS IT WON'T WORK. IT'LL CONFUSE THE COMPUTER BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING FOR THE SPECIFIC 52 PULSE FOR ONE REVOLUTION. SO THE ONLY OPTION WE HAVE ON THIS TRUCK IS TO HAVE CUSTOM RINGS MADE.

(IAN)>> NOW THAT MAY BE ONE WAY TO REMOVE A BUMPER, BUT IT KINDA PROVES A POINT. THE BUMPERS ON THE FRONT AND BACK OF THIS JEEP, THEY'RE NOT VERY STRONG. THEY'RE ACTUALLY JUST FOAM FILLED RUBBER. NOW THEY DO THAT FOR THE WEIGHT SAVINGS. IT'LL HELP WITH FUEL ECONOMY AND THE FACT THAT THE JEEP IS SOMEWHAT UNDERPOWERED WITH THE VSIX. BUT WE DON'T WANT THAT. WHEN YOU'RE OUT WHEELING, YOU WANT BUMPERS THAT ARE STRONG. SO WE'VE GOTTA CHANGE'EM. THESE ARE HEAVY DUTY REPLACEMENT BUMPERS FOR THE JEEP JK, AND THEY'RE FROM OVERKILL ENGINEERING. NOW THE FRONT IS ONE OF THEIR NARROW ROCK CRAWLER SERIES BUMPERS WITH AN INTEGRATED GRILL HOOP. IT'S DESIGNED TO GET THE OBSTACLE OFF THE BUMPER AND INTO THE JEEP'S FRONT TIRE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT CONTACTING THE BODY OF THE JEEP. THE BACK IS A FULL WIDTH BUMPER THAT'LL PROTECT THE REAR QUARTER OF OUR BODY TUB AND IT'S BUILT WITH AN INTEGRATED SPARE TIRE SWING AWAY HINGE SET UP SO WE CAN MOUNT OUR 37 INCH FULL SIZE SPARE ON THE BACK OF OUR JEEP. NOW WE DIDN'T PUT A LOT OF BODY ARMOR ON THE REST OF OUR JEEP TO KEEP IT KINDA LIGHT, BUT WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT BUMPERS, HEAVY IS WHAT YOU WANT.
PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST INVESTMENTS YOU CAN MAKE WHEN YOU'RE BUILDING A TRAIL TRUCK IS A GOOD WINCH. HONESTLY A GOOD ENOUGH WINCH YOU CAN PROBABLY GET A RENTAL CAR THROUGH MOST TRAILS. SO ON THE FRONT OF OUR JK WE'RE GONNA BE MOUNTING A WARN NINE POINT FIVE TI THERMAL METRIC WINCH. IT HAS A 9,500 POUND SINGLE LINE PULL THANKS TO THE 156 TO ONE GEAR REDUCTION IN THE PLANETARY MOTOR. NOW THE NICE THING ABOUT THE THERMAL METRIC FEATURE IS ON THE REMOTE THERE'S A SMALL RED LED. ON THOSE LONG STATIC LINE PULLS WHERE YOU'RE USING THE WINCH A LOT, IF THE MOTOR STARTS TO GET HOT IT WILL FIRST WARN YOU AND THEN SHUT THE MOTOR DOWN TO PROTECT IT, KEEP IT FROM GETTING BURNED OUT. AND ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS MOUNT IT ON OUR BUMPER. THE WINCH COMES WITH SPECIFIC MOUNTING INSTRUCTIONS, BUT THE NICE THING ABOUT USING AN AFTERMARKET BUMPER IS IT COMES PREDRILLED AND IT'S MADE OF THE CORRECT THICKNESS STEEL FOR MOST POPULAR WINCHES.

BUT NOW THANKS TO A KIT FROM MASTERCRAFT, WE CAN PUT FOUR INDIVIDUAL BUCKETS IN THE JEEP. NOW THE NICE THING ABOUT THAT IS WE'RE GONNA BE INSTALLING BAJA RS BUCKETS. NOW THAT MEANS THAT EACH PERSON WILL BE ABLE TO ADJUST THE SEAT BACK AND FORTH FOR A COMFORTABLE RIDING POSITION AS WELL AS PITCH IT FORWARD TO GET IN BEHIND THE SEATS FOR ITEMS THAT WE MAY HAVE STORED. NOW THE BAJA RS IS A TRUE SUSPENSION SEAT WITH A METAL FRAME DRAPED WITH PARACHUTE CORD TO ABSORB THE SHOCK WHEN YOU'RE ON THE TRAIL. NOW WE WENT AHEAD AND HAD THEM COVER THEM IN A NICE GREY TWEED AND BLACK VINYL. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE DIDN'T WELD THIS CAGE IN COMPLETELY. THE POSITION OF THIS BELT BAR IS NOT LETTING US GET THE SEAT BACK FAR ENOUGH. THE SOLUTION IS SIMPLE. WE'LL JUST BUILD A NEW BAR WITH A LITTLE BIT MORE BEND AND TRY AGAIN.

FOR THIS BOTTOM RAIL OF THE SLIDER, WE'LL START WITH A PIECE OF INCH AND THREE QUARTER DOM TUBING WITH ROUNDED CAPS FROM BALLISTIC FABRICATION WELDED IN TO EITHER END. WE'LL ADD A SECONDARY RUB RAIL TO ACT AS A STEP AND TO PROTECT THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE ROCKER. OD TUBE CLAMPS WILL ATTACH TO THE UPPER PART OF OUR ROLL CAGE, AND ANOTHER PIECE OF INCH AND THREE QUARTER DOM IS BENT TO CREATE THAT UPPER RUB RAIL. THE JEEP'S BODY HAS A SLIGHT ARC IN THE BPILLAR. SO ANOTHER PIECE OF TUBING WILL BE RUN THROUGH THE TUBE ROLLER AND ADDED WITH AN IAD TUBE CLAMP AND TACKED IN PLACE. THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY IS THEN ATTACHED TO THE FRAME OF THE JEEP WITH SOME SHORT PIECES OF TUBING. NOW THAT MAKES UP THE ENTIRE BPILLAR PROTECTION PACKAGE, AND YOU CAN SEE THAT WE HAVE THE UPPER RAIL AS WELL AS THIS TUBE THAT RUNS DOWN THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE JEEP TO PROTECT IT FROM ANY OBSTACLE OUT ON THE TRAIL. AND THE BEST PART IS IT'S EASILY REMOVABLE. ALL WE'VE GOT TO DO IS UNBOLT THE OD TUBE CLAMPS AT THE TOP, SPLIT DOWN HERE AT THE BOTTOM, AND YOU CAN JUST SET IT ASIDE, PUT THE DOORS BACK ON THE JEEP, AND DRIVE IT EVERYDAY. AFTER CUTTING A HOLE IN THE FENDER, THE ALL ALUMINUM SNORKEL MOUNTS OFF OF THE WINDSHIELD FRAME. FLEXIBLE TUBING ALLOWS THE AIR TO FLOW FROM THE SNORKEL TO THE AIR INTAKE OF THE SUPERCHARGER. ONCE THE ENGINE IS IN THE VEHICLE, YOU LOSE POWER ON EVERY PART OF THE DRIVETRAIN. THE HYDRAULIC COUPLER ON THE TORQUE CONVERT, THE LOAD OF THE ENGINE TURNING THE INTERNALS OF THAT TRANSMISSION, AND THE TRANSFER CASE. AND FINALLY POWER IS LOST RIGHT AT THE RING AND PINION AND THE EFFORT IT TAKES TO TURN LARGER TIRES.
