2023 Is Reportedly the Last Year of the Camaro

When we close our eyes and imagine the word “rivals,” what comes to mind? For us, it’s hard to think of anything else other than the great Camaro Vs. Mustang battles since the 60s. While the Mustang is still outperforming its competition and thriving, news has surfaced from GM Authority that by 2023, the Camaro will be riding off into the sunset. It’s indeed sad news, even for enthusiasts on the other side of the Christmas tree lights at the drag strip.

According to the website, the 2024 Chevrolet Camaro will come as a special-edition “farewell package.” Up to this point, it hasn’t received an official name, but it will be offered across most trims levels, including the SS, LT1, LT, and ZL1. The package is rumored to be restricted to the interior and exterior, with no plans of powertrain or suspension upgrades over the current models, which isn’t too shocking given that Chevrolet has largely scaled back operations and resources from the Camaro.

It’s likely the lack of commitment from Chevrolet to upgrade the powertrain and suspension for the final years of the Camaro is due to emissions. It’s also said it could be due to validation costs, which at this time, cannot be justified for the Camaro, especially with its slumping sales. It was rumored to be getting the CT-5 Blackwing‘s LT4 and boast a beastly 668 horsepower, but that won’t happen. The current ZL1 offers 650 horsepower. Still no slouch, by any stretch of the imagination.

We recently reported about the possibility of 2023 being the last year for the Camaro, but we were uncertain at that point. However, it appears as though it has reached the end of the road. With a definitive timeline from a good source, it might be time to consider buying a new Camaro if you want to retain a piece of history. With GM currently transitioning their fleet to all-electric by 2035, “Camaro” could end up like the Mustang with the Mach-E, but only time will tell.
