Adam Driver Revealed as Enzo Ferrari in Upcoming Biopic
We can only hope that Adam Driver’s Italian accent as Enzo Ferrari will sound more authentic than Chris Pratt’s as Mario, as the Star Wars actor has been chosen to play the lead role in the upcoming Ferrari biopic scheduled for release in 2023.
While other big names like Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale were rumored to take on the role of il Commendatore, it was Driver whose growing portfolio of impressive performances landed him the lead. He had previously portrayed Italian businessman and former head of the Gucci fashion house, Maurizio Gucci in House of Gucci.
Photos of Driver as Ferrari on the set of the biopic have since emerged on social media.
Penelope Cruz is also attached to the film as Ferrari’s wife, Laura Ferrari, as well as Shailene Woodley as Ferrari’s mistress, Lina Lardi. Lardi is the mother of Ferrari’s only surviving child, Piero Ferrari. The role of former professional racer Piero Taruffi will be portrayed by Patrick Dempsey, an already active racing enthusiast.
The film will be directed by Michael Mann (The Last of the Mohicans, Heat), who has actively pursued the Ferrari biopic for many years and had even worked alongside Troy Kennedy-Martin on the film’s screenplay, which was based on the book Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine by Brock Yates.
The film will center around the very difficult year of 1957 as Ferrari nears turning 60-years-old. It was around this time when a Ferrari 335S race car lost a tire during the Mille Miglia when it crashed into the crowd which caused the driver, co-driver, and nine spectators to lose their lives. Meanwhile, Ferrari is still mourning the loss of his firstborn son, Dino, who passed away the year earlier, all while dealing with his company facing bankruptcy.
Apple TV+ is also developing a drama series about Enzo Ferrari with Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight at the helm.
