Ford Demonstrates High-Res Headlights That Can Project Images
As automakers continue to develop technology to benefit the driver, they are taking your fellow drivers’ safety into account as well. Say you are driving through a thickly-settled area with little-to-no street lighting and road markings are hardly visible. Ford’s new high-resolution headlights would be able to brightly illuminate the area in front of the vehicle, as well as “project directions, speed limits, or weather information onto the road so the driver’s gaze can remain fixed on the way ahead.”
These projections would also come to serve other road users as well, such as projecting a crosswalk for pedestrians that is visible to everyone. Other options include a visual path for drivers to follow so that cyclists can use that opportunity to pass safely.
Ford’s engineers are continuing to develop this technology for optimum safety for night driving, extreme weather, incoming road conditions, navigation, etc. There are even possible entertainment purposes being developed as well.
“What started as playing around with a projector light and a blank wall could take lighting technologies to a whole new level,” says Lars Junker of features and software for Ford of Europe’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. “The driver could get essential information without ever needing to take their eyes off the road.”
