Ford & General Motors Won’t Be Getting Rid of the V8 Engine For A Long Time

These days, automakers have been facing constant pressure to reduce carbon emissions on future vehicles, especially gas-powered ones equipped with a V8 engine. However, despite the ever-changing landscape of the auto industry, both Ford and General Motors won’t be retiring the V8 engine anytime soon.

Long Live the V8 Engine

While Ford and GM recognize the future of electrified vehicles, they also haven’t made plans to leave the V8 behind. If anything, both brands have done the exact opposite by investing even more in development behind them. This is evident by Ford’s new 5.0L Coyote V8 equipped in the 2024 Ford Mustang GT, which produces 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.

The same can be said out GM’s upcoming Gen IV Small Block V8 for its next generation of trucks and SUVs, with the latest LS376/525 cranking out 525 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque. GM even announced at the beginning of 2023 that it would be investing almost a billion dollars into the production of its next-gen V8’s that could be assembled in factories until 2035.

This means that both Ford and GM are aware of the large demand for vehicles powered by V8 engines, and it doesn’t look like either company will be tossing them aside for a while. If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll see an 8th-generation V8-powered Ford Mustang in the future!
