Ford, Ram battle it out over best-in-class towing

In a story from Auto News, Ford is threatening legal action if Ram keeps claiming that its pickups offer “best-in-class” towing.

Ford says that their 2015 F-450 4×4 Crew Cab can tow 31,200 pounds, which is 1,200 pounds more than the Ram 3500. However, Auto News says it’s not that simple because of the way Ford calculates maximum payload. While Ram goes by the SAE J2807 Rating, Ford uses a different internal system.

Ram claims in the story that the F-450 and the Ram 3500 aren’t in the same class because the F-450 is a larger, Class 4 pickup, and it’s the only Class 4 pickup offered by any automaker. They compete directly with Class 3 pickups, such as the Ford F350 and GMC Sierra 3500, both of which Ram claims to out pull.
