IIHS Raises The Standards for its 2023 Top Safety Pick Awards; Announces The Winners
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent, nonprofit organization that provides scientific research and data regarding the safety standards it sets for major automakers in an effort to reduce the number of injuries and deaths that occur on the road.
Each year the IIHS releases the winners of its Top Safety Pick+ and Top Safety Pick awards for new models that meet the requirements for side-impact protection, crash-prevention technology, and illuminating headlights to see clearly at night. In 2022, 65 models received a TSP+ award and 36 won a TSP. In 2023, the IIHS raised its standards for all of its categories, resulting in only 28 models winning the TSP+ and 20 receiving the TSP accolaide.
In order for a vehicle to receive a Top Safety Pick+ award, it must score high in the following categories:
- Good rating for the driver and passenger-side small overlap front tests and original moderate overlap front test
- Good rating in the updated side impact test
- Acceptable or Good ratings for the improved headlight standards
