Man Retires After Record-Setting 67 Years With General Motors
What a career! After working at the Warren Tech Center for more than 67 years, Elmer Zurakowski will say goodbye.
Detroit News WXYZ says Zurakowski is the highest seniority hourly employee in all of General Motors.
It was 1951 and he remembers as he started the job seeing workers building tanks for the Korean War.
“Well I started working when I was 18-years-old. I became a die maker apprentice. This was at Plant 23 in Detroit,” recalled Zurakowski.
The work at General Motors supported his family. He and his wife had a son and three daughters. Mr. Zurakowski is also a member of Mensa International, the high IQ society. In his retirement he is looking forward to focusing on his woodworking hobby and spending time with family.
“If you don’t get your pleasure out of your work, you are never going to know what pleasure is. If you think you are not having fun, start thinking differently,” he said.
