Mercedes-Benz Partners with Apple & Universal to Develop Thumping 4D Sound System
Mercedes-Benz announced in a press release that they have formed a partnership with Apple Music and Universal Music Group to develop what it claims to be the greatest sound experience in any car on the market today.
“The new collaboration builds upon the integration of Dolby Atmos immersive audio in the optional Burmester® high-end 4D and 3D sound system offered in Mercedes-Benz vehicles with the latest MBUX generation,” says Mercedes-Benz.
The automaker quotes a survey that finds more than 76% of drivers believe having realistic spatial sound in their vehicle is either “important” or “rather important” in their decision when making a vehicle purchase because more than 70% of people say they mostly listen to music while in their car.
A demonstration of the automaker’s Burmester 4D sound system in a 2022 Maybach S-Class seeks to meet those prospective customers’ standards.
The Burmester® high-end 4D sound system includes:
- 31 speakers, including six 3D speakers that emit their sound from above, 4 near-ear speakers in the front seats, an 18.5-liter subwoofer
- 8 sound transducers (two per seat)
- 2 amplifiers
- 1750 watts power
Kevin Yeaman, President and CEO of Dolby Laboratories says of the new sound system, “a one-of-a-kind immersive music experience in Dolby Atmos, setting a new bar for how music should be heard in the car.”
The Burmester 4D sound system comes with a price tag of $6,730 in the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S580.
