Rare Buick Muscle Car Sets Record at Auction
We knew the used car market was hot, but sheesh, this is on another level. Don’t let anyone tell you purchasing a new car is a depreciating asset because this 1987 Buick GNX muscle car just netted a six-figure payday for its owner. The ’87 Buick GNX eclipsed a previous record held by another GNX in 2017 that brought in $200,000 for the 547th GNX produced, but this recent display of let’s throw our money around surely takes the cake. Sure, it’s an exceptional car, but what makes it worth $275,000?
For starters, this GNC has only 8.7 miles on the odometer. If you have the discipline to purchase a cool car, never drive it, (unless you Ferris Bueller the car and drive it in reverse, or if you leave it under a tree for decades and forget about it like Ken Thwaits ’85 Camaro), you could have an appreciating asset in your driveway. However, when you purchase a car like this, not driving it is blasphemous. With that said, a lot of cars have eight miles and aren’t worth nearly this much so what else makes it worth more than a house?
Well, the car spent its life on display and in storage, meaning it was in phenomenal shape from the start. It’s not a restored version of itself and is stock from the factory. It was sold in 1987 by Ralph’s Buick in Mena, AR, and was put on display in a Texas business, then stashed in an environment-controlled display area where it wasn’t driven since.
All of that meant something to someone and why the turbocharged 3.8L V6 commanded such a high dollar figure. When it was built, the GNX was one of the quickest cars in the world, faster than some V8s in its time. It could run 0-60 in 4.6 seconds, only slower than a Porsche 911 Turbo that did it in 4.5 seconds, which should tell you something. This particular car is the lowest-mileage example and will make its new owner very happy. Hopefully it gets driven this time.
