What a miracle everyone walked away from this one. During the annual Weekend on the Edge Dyno competition in Ogden, Utah, things got a little…heated. The event was an all-day dyno competition that attracted some of the most powerful diesel trucks in the country. However, as all gearheads know, things don’t always go according to plan.
The whole run was caught on video and you can watch the turbo-diesel engines give it their all before the whole thing goes sideways. Randy Reyes was behind the camera when the late-model Ram Cummins diesel truck was making its run. Reyes’ builds transmissions for high-performance diesel trucks.
According to the video description, the truck had already made a “clean pass,” where its 48RE transmission held its own against the highest horsepower rating recorded for a diesel. Then, the engine failed.
The truck started out steady for the second pass but within minutes, the Cummins diesel took the truck’s chassis and used it as a launch-pad. The engine shoots out of the engine bay, rocket style, and takes the hood with it. As you can imagine, flames took over the entire front of the truck after the driver was able to jump out.
Crews were able to extinguish the fire and the video ends with a shot of the charred shell of the truck. As of now, there are no details as to what caused the explosion. The driver did sustain some injuries, but none were life-threatening.
